With over 200 posts in that old "Official Thursday Night" thread started by Pete early last year, I suggest we retire it and start anew for the remainder of this year since it's becoming unwieldy.

Since I haven't seen anything come of those suggestions last week (not a dig at Martin!), let's try something for now to make it easier to read at a glance: in the subject line, preface with the date, then the pace, then write ON or OFF or TBD, e.g.,

2/2/06 - Moderate - On

In the message body, write any comments. Most importantly - for the benefit of those that read the forums in Hybrid mode - respond to this post (http://www.more-mtb.org/forum/showpost.php?p=20704&postcount=1) so your announcement doesn't get so embedded that it has to be dug up. This last part may not make sense to those that don't read in Hybrid mode, but try switching your options and go into another thread that has 200 responses and you'll see what I mean.

Anyways, I ain't the king of nobody and these are just suggestions. You can laugh if you want. :(

I'll start.

I'll step up for the moderate pace since I haven't heard anyone else has. We start at 6:45, as per the calendar. Remember, if'n it's too greasy, we head out on the CCT.

Or! You could switch to Linear-Newest First and then you wouldn't have those problems anymore!

Casual ride is on tonight, too. I will lead if Drew can not make it. We can keep the ride time at 7:00 if everyone would like, though, I plan to be there at 6:30 or so.

Say you haven't read in a while, or you go back to old threads. In the Linear modes, you can't easily tell who responded to whom, etc.

In that spirit, I'll add my post from the original thread. Thanks again to Craig for stepping up tonight!

Folks,

I apologize for the short notice, but changes at work and at home make it impossible for me to commit to leading the Thursday night casual rides for the forseeable future, starting tonight, I'm afraid.

If you are interested in taking over the Thursday night casual rides, contact Jason (crashmore) by PM or at ride-coordinator@more-mtb.org ASAP. This is a really great ride, and it would really be sad to let it fall by the wayside.

Again, sorry for the short notice - I just found out this morning about a bunch of travel/projects/functions with the kids, etc.

Say you haven't read in a while, or you go back to old threads. In the Linear modes, you can't easily tell who responded to whom, etc.Yeah, for you, what's "haven't read in a while"? Like about 40 minutes? :D

If you "haven't read in a while" it's not so important, perhaps, to instantly find the latest ride announcement. If you either have, or have not read lately, and just want to check the most recent ride status, it's pretty easy using linear-newest viewing and the threads should be near the top, with the current ride near the top, too. Then if you want to read all the other junk, isn't it just a mouse click away to change to hybrid, no?

But it's OK. I'm just presenting alternatives. If you can convince Martin that this is Burger King, you're welcome to have it your way! :p

Me? I'm gonna test out my gimpy wrist on my bike this evening, but I don't think I'm gonna make the long trek to Wakefield. I'll just hang near home. Wish me luck!

Well - It looks not being able to lead the Thursday Night Ride is getting contagious.

I found out yesterday that I need to be on another airplane next Tuesday night and I don't return until February 17th (With the possible extension to the 25th).

SOOOOO - Looks like I need a volunteer to step up for February 9th and February 16th.

Shoot me an E-Mail or a POST and I'll put it into the Calendar.

I'm interested in the night rides but all I have is an old piece of junk handlebar light that's barely sufficient for smooth pavement. What kind of light should one invest in to participate in such a ride? And how much should I expect to spend? Thanks.

Do a search for "lights". Dirty Pete did a good writeup here: http://www.more-mtb.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2409&highlight=lights

A 15-watt set up seems to be the mainstream recommendation, and I'm sure you can find something (non-HID) for somewhere between $180 and $220 (estimate). I have a 10-watt NiteRider helmet mount Trail Rat (think that's the model) that I've used at Wakefield / Accotink for a few years, personally, I find that sufficient, especially if you're riding in a group. I think you can find something like that for aroud $120 or less. Overnight charger, and the burn time is a little over 2 hours - plenty of light for an after-work ride locally.

I guess the question is, how much bling are you after, and what do you want to spend?

Greetings all -

I just noticed that there is no Thursday ride posted on the calendar this week, or for the next couple of weeks. What's up with that?

I have my bike on the car and would be willing to lead a casual/moderate ride tonight if there are any takers. Otherwise, I'll just head home - not really into riding alone. Please reply to this post, or send me an email if anyone is interested.

Thanks!

Craig/Joe,

If you have not already done so, could you forward me the Trail Monitor Reports from last nights ride. Mike and I met with the Park folks last Friday and I have agreed to be the in between guy for the Park and the ride leaders. They REALLY REALLY need those reports, even if the ride is cancelled.

If we can show a certain amount of responsibility with our riding and with our commitment to submitting these reports we can be assured of continued Night Access at Wakefield. With a good track record and precedence behind us we may even get the potential to add additional riding venues.

And PLEASE - don't even hint to me that you any of you all are poaching Wakefield on non riding nights or venturing into Wakefield’s LESSER sister Park. I'm currently involved with an effort to expand night riding venues and I need to have a Sgt Shultz attitude about these things.

L

PS I REALLY need the trail Monitor reports!

PSS Let me know who wants to lead for next week and I'll update the MORE calendar

CRAIG2
February 10th, 2006, 01:32 PM
Hi Larry -

I just sent you my trail report via email. Let me know if you don't receive it, or if additional information is needed.

I would be willing to lead the Thursday casual ride in the meantime until a permanent ride leader is found. I'm not sure I can consistently commit to leading both the Tuesday and Thursday night rides indefinitely.

SO FAR - My ride is still on. My guess is that it will start raining 10 minutes before the start of the ride.

I live on the back side of Accotink and around 11:00 AM we got a trace of rain. Just enough to speckle the driveway but not enough to connect the dots. My guess is that both rides will be on. I rode Accotink yesterday and the trails were in great shape. I expect Wakefield to be ride worthy.

I'll add the less moderate ride into the MORE calendar.

Earlier today the folks at News Channel 8 were calling for another chance of rain at around 4 but the radar map doesn't support that and like posted below - The sun is out. Unless you hear otherwise, assume the ride is on.

Me - I'll be heading out to borrow a bike (Sniff.... Sniff......)

Sunset this Thursday will be 6:11 PM. That means Accotink Park will be officially closed to bikers at 6:41. Plenty of time for a PRE-RIDE with time to get back to Wakefield for the start of the regular ride.

If any one is interested please reply to the thread or shoot me an E-Mail. If I get more than 1 reply I'll add it to the calendar and we'll be official (But we won't need no stinking badges).

FYI- We need to be wheels up by 5:29 (As in NOT 5:30 or 5:31).

Amazing ride last night. I had a weird fall and was stiffening up by the end of it. I didn't realize it until I got home and looked at the data from the heart rate monitor that I also was probably running out of gas.

Thanks to Joe and Scott for the pre-ride. That got my legs moving and my heart working.

Will there be a casual ride?

L
Sounds like the casual ride didn't happen last night. I wish I could commit and make it a dependable thing, but I just can't. I can't make it out consistently (I usually don't know until I get home from work whether I can make it), and I can't make it out as early as I think most folks would prefer to start.

Here's what I can do, however. On the nights I do make it, I arrive at about 7:00; it takes me about 10-15 minutes to get my act together. If they're willing to put up with a late start, I'm perfectly happy to ride with other casual/pokey-type folks when Craig or some other as-yet-to-step-up volunteer (hint, hint, someone!) can't do the regular ride. All you have to do is be willing to accept a late start. Pace will be easy to casual, depending on how I feel.

Here's the catch: it's a crapshoot. Like I said above, I often don't know until the last minute whether I'll be riding at all. Because of that, I wouldn't suggest posting it on the ride calendar or anything like that. When I do know if I can make it, I'll try to post up.

It's not much, sorry, but I'd hate to see Thursday casual night go under.

Again, one day is not gonna matter, but we (MORE) agreed that in order to have the Park open to riders on the Monday's, Tuesday's and Thursday's that we would have a sanctioned ride with at least one Trail Monitor in the Park on each one of those days.

I may just try and make the Thursday night casual ride. I would like to go to FH, but I'm afraid there are just too many downhills for my busted paws to manage. But Wakefield may be just managable for me.

My light is on charge, and so is my psyche! :)

There are many aspects to happy healthy hands. But at the therapist's yesterday, a nice old lady with arthritis had her grip strength measured: 7 lbs. I'm 85 in the left, 95 in the right. Too bad there's still tender scar tissue. My right thumb muscle is starting to round up again, but the left is still very flat. Try it. Hold your palms up at eye level and look at how round your muscle is at the base of your thumb.

Anyway, yesterday I busted off the rear derailluer on my bike. Good thing I kept my old bike. We'll see if that trail repair Scud did on it on the Christmas ride holds. Do I have to take off the Christmas decorations????

:p

Hey Joe,

It's not the actual Monitor presence. I'll be at the Park, so will Mike P and others. It's just that if a ride is listed separately on the MORE Calendar, then there needs to be a Trail Monitor Report done for that ride. The more MORE reports the better we look. We are actually trying to use our reports as a means and cause for opening other Parks to Night Riding (Names of Parks with held on purpose). Also, we need those reports to continue our night riding privileges at Wakefield. The current Park Manager is near retirement, the volunteer coordinator is already a retiree and the assistant Park Manager will probably move along also. When the changing of the guard happens, we need to be as established as we can. We've had it good at Wakefield, but all bets are off when the new management eventually comes in.

Steady, light to moderate rain here in Ballston since a little before 9. Phase 2 was exceptionally dry Tuesdsay, but the other trails were not. Given the current conditions, I would advise against riding Wakefield tonight. Accotink might hold up better. Just my two cents...

That said, I do not plan to lead a casual ride tonight at Wakefield.

Not sure. We're supposed to get more rain later today, though, it's been dry here in Ballston all day. If we got anything over near Wakefield, though, call it off - it was just rideable Tuesday, and if things got any wetter, it will be muddy.

Still, I won't be able to make it over there tonight.

Things started out okay until Scalpel guy who I was sure in a worse state then I had to bail w/ a mechanical - the first time I realized he had a serious mechanical recognizing who would be the anchor of the ride (ME) settled in- ha, ha!

At first it seems strange that there aren't as many riders at Wakefield as there are during the winter. Then it dawned on me that now that the sun stays out longer, there are plenty of other places to ride right after work as well!

That sucks about your tire. How did it tear? Did you hit a sharp rock? They've been very durable for me.

What about the ride? Are you getting it dialed in, or did it feel ok? I guess it'd be more appropriate if you described it in a separate thread...

Yeah, that makes sense.

I think the tear was just a random thing. Heading into Wakefield by the power station, I just started losing air. It was probably a rock or something. But you're right - I'll post up elsewhere later. Right now, suffice to say I think I'm digging the rigid-fork softtail SS 29er thang! :D

Is the night ride on for tonight?

The EVENING rides are indeed still scheduled. At this time of the year, the term "NIGHT" is over rated between the hours of 6:00 and 9:00 PM

Please watch the weather. It's mighty HOT out there this morning and a some cool air is suppose to be moving in. That's usually a good recipe for T-Storms. If we get one or 2 micro bursts we'll still ride. Anything sustained over 30 minutes and we're in trouble.

Welcome EVA, Thurday evening should be a good place to start as long as you are comfortable with your bike. The terrain at Wakefield is not too difficult as long as you maintain a speed you can control, not one that controls you. And if in doubt about any challenge in front of you, dismount and walk it once, then take a good look and gauge whether or not you are ready to try riding over it. Above all else, have fun, and be safe. I look forward to seeing you out on a trail soon. Sorry I wont be able to Make Thursday Night at Wakefield. I will be working With the Marines at Quantico all night Thursday. Now go have some fun and get a little dirty. Dave Marchyshyn. Rosaryville Trail Liason.

Hey, I just got my bike a few weeks ago and wanted to start slow and easy... Is the Thursday night ride a good 'place' to start? Or am I going to be the only 'cautious' beginner?

There's also a casual ride on Tuesdays...it's a bit more consistent.

I just wanted to post a reminder that this Thursday will be the last scheduled Thursday Night Ride at Wakefield till July 27th. (Although I may be able to lead one July 6th - I'll post if I can)

I just can't do both the race series on Wednesday's and the rides on Thursday's.

If somebody wants to step up to lead a ride, and they are willing and able to do a trail monitor report after each ride, please PM me.

L

PS We really need a Casual ride leader to step up also. I felt bad last Thursday for the folks who showed and tried to hang. Pete/Craig - They miss you guys immensely.

I deleted the reference to the casual ride last night at about 11:00 PM. Nobody had stepped up to the plate and with folks showing up to preride the WAW and CM I didn't think it would be fair to say there would be one. I'll re-add it back on the Calendar

(Shifting this thread back over to da left! )

And I, as usual, will likely straggle in at about 7:00 if any other casual riders can't make the traditional start time. Also as usual, I'll probably head over to Accotink and see who I can find.

Cool. I'm thinking about taking the usual route up that hill by the stairs this week, proceeding up to the cinder trail where the Boy Scout trail begins, and then taking the cinder trail to the right down to where the singletrack begins over near that power plant (?) on the Accotink side. And then we'll kind of make our way back in again, over kind of towards that rock garden.

Sounds like you're pretty fit, so you should do ok. The rest, like the technical ability, just comes with practice. I've been riding for 3 or 4 years now and I'm still terrible. Dude - It's all WAKEFIELD! But I think you mean, “Will the non bowl section of the course be the same as the WAW?”. And the answer to that one is "YES!".

Also, somebody asked if the WAW will be the same week to week. The first two races (Last nights and the one scheduled for next Wednesday) will be identical. The last 2 will be essentially the same course, but I may remove the stream valley trail for the sake of time. Also, the 6:55 racers get a variation of their Start uphill. But I digress................

I so wish I could get out tonight! I'm a big fan of the cranky monkey course. The section through the bowl is soft, dark, and quiet (at least when you're alone) - it's a nice change from the tight, fast, bright bowl sections. Although the soil is softer and slower . . . I dunno, it's nice to mix it up a bit - plus that jump over the log (near the tunnel) is always fun :) I'm not sure if the course goes over that log, or the next crossing to the right of it. My guess is you'll have the option to do either . . . Good place to pass some folks . . .

Sadly, after weeks (years) of neglect, my bottom bracket is toast, my drivechain squeaks like crazy, and my derailleurs strongly discourage any type of shifting

Well have a good ride, and remember to pour one on the log pile for your homies who couldn't be there . . .

I know that it is not on the calendar this week due to the W@W races, but I do plan to lead a casual pace Wake/Tink ride tomorrow, 6/27. We'll probably hit Accostink first, and head back to Wakefield for a lap afterwards. Pace will depend on who shows; in any case, the pace will not be any faster than a casualish moderate pace as I'm not in great shape and I'll be lucky if I can muster anything remotely resembling a moderate pace  :D

Any questions, feel free to shoot me an email or just reply to this post. If there's interest, we might get a band together for post-ride "hydration" at Kilroy's.

Just as well - my body's trying to fight off a cold, and I'd have been too dumb to stay home and get some rest otherwise.

You are jumping the gun. Golf, Crieg? Is that like lawn darts.

It's kind of like lawn darts, but it's more frustrating, and they have nachos and beer. Even watching paint dry is fun when you have nachos and beer.

As advertised, the casual Wake/Tink ride for tomorrow is ON. We may venture over to Accotink; however, depending on who shows, we may just stick to Wakefield (if we get beginners). As always, I'll look forward to seeing everyone out there!

All,

We are starting to run out of daylight. It's pretty dark in the woods by 8:15 on a clear night. If clouds roll in (And there is a 40% chance that they will), it will probably be really dark by 8:00 PM. That's not a problem if you’re planning on stopping your ride around then, but if you’re hoping to go to that 8:20/8:30 I'd recommend bringing a light.

(Craig - I've officially added you as a Co-Ride Contact on the Thursday rides. Now you get credit for leading a ride but "I" don't have to put in two separate entries.

I've increased my MORE productivity by 50% for Thursday's rides)
