I got home from work tonight, went to the mailbox and found a small parcel there. I figured it was a Christmas present from a friend in New Mexico. But no! It was an extremely belated birthday present! How unique! A small, flask with the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology logo.
I got to thinking of that ride at Gambrill a few weeks ago. One of the guys mentioned the Schnapps that I, as leader, was supposed to bring. Hypothetically speaking (because of course *I* would never mix alcohol and bicycling), what would *you* keep in your special NMT flask to keep you warm on a cold winter day? Curiously, it's such a nice little flask, it would fit happily in a Camelbak.... Not that I would ever bring anything but medicinal fluids along.....

pineapples soaked in Rye moonshine, I know the pineapples will not in a flask but the juice will. You can carry the pineapples in something else. nothing will get your gut warmer.

Single malt scotch or a good Irish wiskey! Either will keep you warm on a cold day.

I'm more of a beer & wine kinda person, so nothing came to mind 'til I got today's paper. The food section features an Italian liqueur called Limoncello that I just might have to try to make.
Grain alcohol infused with lemon zest, sweetened with simple syrup. Sounds tasty and "refreshing" (i.e.: packs a wallop :D ) after a hard ride on a cold day!

I have had some store bought limonzecko, and it was dangerous...
But I find nothing finer than Brindley's Gold Vanilla Rum...so smooth you can pour it over ice and call it a day.
Even at 10 am.
Which I want to do.
Right Now.

I've always liked Hot Damn... It will warm your gullet up nicely, and it won't kick your butt too bad.

If I was a drinkin' man, and I may be ;) , I would go with some Maker's Mark Burbon. I especially like the shiver I get afterwards. Makes me feel all warm and happy on the inside. :o

Grain alcohol infused with lemon zest, sweetened with simple syrup. Sounds tasty and refreshing (read: packs a wallop :D ) When we went down on caving expeditions to Mexico, we'd take grain alcohol. Then we'd mix it with lemonade (in the cave we had Crystal Light). It weren't not too bad. Most bang for the weight you'd carry to underground camp. We sure didn't have much, but it was nice for a rare treat.
I remember one time on the surface on an off day. We hiked down the 700 ft to the bottom of the next sinkhole over to do laundry in the stream. The team physician didn't know what a 1:10 mix was and made up the concoction about 1:1! We had an Irish guy there along with a few British buddies. Well, THAT Irishman couldn't hold his likker. He was seriously schnockered. I had to haul another guy's laundry out with mine, while he basically hauled Tony back up the 700'. He dropped Tony in a lawn chair in the hut, and left him there to sleep it off. Well, the British friend went to check up on him, and Tony had fallen over, still sitting in the lawn chair! "You just left him there?" I asked aghast! "Yes." Well, I went over, looked at Tony laying there on his side still in the chair, took his picture, then left him there.........

I have a nice little flask myself--it's very little. I think it holds about 2.5 ounces. When I used to drink I kept it full of cask strength single malt Scotch. Usually an Islay. Nothing takes the chill off like a dram of Caol lla or Bunnahabain at 130 proof.

I'd be surprised if I could get 6 oz. in mine, but maybe. My friend from NMT said they had to order a dozen to get them made. So! You know what that means! We can get MORE flasks made! :D
Any takers?

Judging from eBay, folks took their subtle public drinking seriously between the U.S. Civil War and WWII. Lots of very, very nice flasks made from about the 1870s through the 1930s. Seriously, works of art.

When I was a wee lad (alright... wee-er) in my late teens, I had a taste for whiskey. As did a mate of mine's dad. I had (still have!) a hipflask adorned with GAZ on in, similar to our 'Ara's one there. So one day, while I was at said buddy's house, I emptied my flask of Jameson into a glass, refilled the flask up with his dad's Midleton Rare, and then topped the bottle back up with the discarded Jameson.
Of course his dad immediately noticed once he took a sip that night, flayed my buddy alive, got the story, told my dad who promptly flayed ME alive, and I was penniless for the following month as I had to obtain a new bottle of Midleton for him. At least I learned a valuable lesson:
Never EVER f**k with another man's whiskey!

Gary, did you ever tell us how you became "GAZ"? I assume it's not Gary AriZona? :)
Haha, nope. Honestly, there's no story to it, just the typical nickname associated with the name Gary. (Either Gaz, Gazza, or Gazzer) All my friends back home used to call me it as far back as I can remember, even my parents and teachers did. As time went on though, I learned that Gaz was French for Gas. When I discovered my love beer and Indian food, my nickname went from "just cause" to "pretty damned appropriate." Now it's apparantly "Glorious Beacon of Light" heheh...

I made a point of not getting the bean burrito at lunch today that I wanted, specifically so I wouldn't acquire a nickname such as your own. Besides, I'm merely "really nice."

Yikes! That flask holster costs $30! I don't know what my flask cost ('cuz it was a BD present). But jeez! $30!
Well, the other day I tried out some peppermint schnapps in my flask. Not tasted until AFTER the ride. It tasted like liquid toothpaste.........

I concur. And there is the added benefit that the grain alchohol can be used as both a disinfectant and an anesthetic. Maybe even a degreaser...
