Russian squirrel pack 'kills dog'
Squirrels have bitten to death a stray dog which was barking at them in a Russian park, local media report.
Passers-by were reportedly too late to stop the attack by the black squirrels in a village in the far east, which reportedly lasted about a minute. They are said to have scampered off at the sight of humans, some carrying pieces of flesh.
A pine cone shortage may have led the squirrels to seek other food sources, although scientists are sceptical.
The attack was reported in parkland in the centre of Lazo, a village in the Maritime Territory, and was witnessed by three local people.
A "big" stray dog was nosing about the trees and barking at squirrels hiding in branches overhead when a number of them suddenly descended and attacked, reports say.
"They literally gutted the dog," local journalist Anastasia Trubitsina told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.
"When they saw the men, they scattered in different directions, taking pieces of their kill away with them."
Mikhail Tiyunov, a scientist in the region, said it was the first he had ever heard of such an attack.
While squirrels without sources of protein might attack birds' nests, he said, the idea of them chewing at a dog to death was "absurd".
"If it really happened, things must be pretty bad in our forests," he added.
Komosmolskaya Pravda notes that in a previous incident this autumn chipmunks terrorised cats in a part of the territory.
A Lazo man who called himself only Mikhalich said there had been "no pine cones at all" in the local forests this year.
"The little beasts are agitated because they have nothing to eat," he said.
I don't believe I'm alone when saying... JESUS H. CHRIST!!!!

They probably just went postal. All those years of harassment by dogs. Some squirrels having seen their friends eaten alive. Yes, the day has come in which they will stand and fight for their rights. This is the beginning of a squirrel rights movement and we have only caught a glimpse of the beginning!

I blame the russian mafia. I've seen movies about them. You don't want to mess with them... or their squirrels... or their squirrel's nuts.

Okay, I have to add to my statement. How is it that the BBC picked this story up and Fox News missed out on it???? I guess since they didn't get video footage of the actual killing, they couldn't run with it.

Perhaps the government sensored media of Russia is affraid that Fox would label the squirrels as right-wing communist fanatics and Putin didn't want the bad publicity. They are probably flushing the squirrels out of the trees with an unknown opiate based gas as we speak.

I think the BBC just has a thing about squirrels. They had links to other squirrel stories on that page. There was a restaurant that served saddle of squirrel (whatever part a squirrel the "saddle" is), but bad publicity hounded them to quit. Then there was a story about the new Tsar for Squirrels. If you all didn't know, American grey squirrels are an invasive species and are driving down the native red squirrel population.
And of course, a while ago there was that (bogus in my opinion) story of squirrels on crack.

When I lived in Gburg, we had a 3 legged racoon come and eat the squirrels' food after dark.
Good picture of the Russian Ninja Squirrel. I'm sure that such pictures are very rare and hard to come by!

Speaking of Squirrelbino, I snapped this downtown w/my camera phone the other day. Not a great shot, I know, but yes, it is an albino squirrel:

Not all white squirrels are albinos. Just like there are black color variants, there are also white ones:

You could. But I think "Chit Chat" is just fine as a home.

Maybe not Russian Mafia Squirrels, but I did see a squirrel having one of those moments that made me wish I had my camcorder handy.
Three of them were frolicking in our backyard. (The squirrels do a lot of that these days since one of my dachshunds died back in June. He was the primary squirrel chaser. The surviving dachshund is almost 17 years old and now could care less about these critters). This attracted the attention of my rear neighbor's West Highland Terrier who came up to the wire mesh on the split rail fence. One of the squirrels went up to the fence, up on its hind legs and went nose to nose through the mesh with the Westie. The Westie was stunned and didn't seem to know how to react (Now that I caught it, now what?). As soon as the squirrel backed off the fence, he began flipping out and charging back and forth. One of these days, he's going to figure out how to dig under the fence.

Speaking of squirrels, or critters acting like them...
Back in the 80's when we were living in downtown Boston, I had a cameraless moment one summer night. 'Bout 2am I heard something outside my 2nd story window, so I got up to check it out. I quietly raised the screen and came face to face with a racoon hanging head-down on the drain pipe, about 18" from my face!
We stared at each other for a few moments, and then when on about our business...

On Christmas Eve, Jabberwocky and I rode Accotink and there were 5, count them 5, squirrels frolicking happily togther. It was sooooo sweet.
Though I have to say, my heart is stolen down here at the Dive Outpost. There's a little kitty with some Scottish Fold blood in her with the folded down ears. Soooo adorable! Tiny and bony, but very sweet.

I wouldn't know... Complicated chain of custody, but I doubt it.
Now...I just need to get my butt out of the computer chair and onto a bicycle seat more often!
Oh well...better weather is coming soon.
