Was browsing the forums and came accross a post about how bad the heat was at schaffer last week and was curious if you've ever needed help out because of bonking, crash, etc.

Tell us your story here...

My story:

Many moons ago (crica 1995) I had a pretty nasty crash at Avalon, cracked some ribs and messed up my collar bone pretty bad. Friend had to help me out and carry my bike cause of a destoryed front wheel...

sitting at home w/ my right arm in a sling right now. fell at schaffer today and tore my a/c joint ligament so my clavicle is sticking straight up. my buddy who i was riding w/ is a physician and he examined me and said i have either a type 3 or 4 tear. surgery is required for type 4 (total tear) and may be required for type 3 (mostly torn). have to see an ortho to get it examined further. what sucks is that i can't ride for 4-6 weeks now. :(

THIS SUCKS!

Sorry for the lack of caps. typing left handed.

Dude I truly know how you feel! I had the same injury last year - but only a category 2 tear. Took me 6 weeks to get back on the MTB - but then I'm a wus!

I can HIGHLY reccomend the orthopedist I went to:
Dr. David Higgins
3420 Morningwood Drive
Olney, MD 20832
301-231-7760

He specializes in shoulders and arms and is a sports medicine practice. He's also a roady but don't hold that against him! One of the therapists (I forget his name) in his Physical Therapy practice is an MTB'er.

Hope it turns out to be less severe than expected - take good drugs do your PT religiously and get better soon!

BTW - Mine was a road ride - crash happened right before the entrance to Schaeffer and I had to be driven home by a good samaritan and later spent 6 hours in the ER since I had no idea at the time how much or what kind of damage I had done.

Thanks for the kind words. The orthoped that I'm seeing now is also extremely good at what he does and specializes in sports medicine as well. My wife had gone to him in the past which is why I trusted his opinion. He said he's done many of these operations and trained under the man that pioneered the procedure (screws that they insert are named after him) so I'm hoping he knows what he's talking about. However, if I don't like something about my doctor I'll be sure to give the doctor you mentioned a call. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks bro. It actually turned out to be worse than originally thought and I was downgraded to a type 5 separation since the distance between the torn side is greater than 100% of the non-torn side. :(

In any case, I'll be going into surgery in the coming week(s) and unfortunately won't be able to get back on a bike for 5-6 months (2 surgeries, recovery time, and PT). :( I guess at least I have a legit excuse for not riding when it's frigid cold out. ;)
