Way back in 1995, when I got my first mountain bike, I did a few of the local races. I got my arse handed to me so I started actually training for them. I discovered that if I was often riding for the sake of training, not for the fun of riding. It became a job to me. Before I could decide whether or not to continue, my bike was stolen and it took me 9 years to get another one.
I am tempted to give racing another shot but am afraid that my competetive nature will turn the process into a job again. And I really hate to think about how soundly I would be thrashed if I entered. Maybe next year, when I am 35 and in a new age bracket. :p

Racing is really just an excuse to have to "train" which means many hours of riding. Well, many hours of riding are very enjoyable... the racing is a way to meet and greet many new people. The local races are a blast, especially if you don't take them too seriously. You should come on out and enjoy the fun. :D

Not this year, but I'm toying with the idea of next summer.

Just not sure I can handle the sight of a one-legged blind man passing me on a SS while pulling his seeing eye dog in a burley trailer.
