I like my kenda nevegal tires. I think they work
well across a variety of conditions. At hotcycle,
in the cat 3 race, we had an great deal of mud.
Traction across wet logs and rock was good.
But, they seam to hold a lot of mud between the
tread. Even after getting some speed, could only
loose a little mud with centrifugal force of the
spinning wheels.

Still learning, and curious what others
are experiencing.

I have Excavators and they packed up too. There are mud specific tires out there, but most of the time you would avoid trails when wet. That said, I like the looks of Kenda's King of Traction.

If you're riding in conditions with a lot of mud you need tires with the knobs more spread out so the mud won't cake up between the knobs.

I don't usually ride XC in muddy conditions, but for DH I use Maxxis Swampthings.

Conti Mountain Kings are my standard for good debirs/mud shedding tires, have never had them pack up.

There is a shortage of quality muddy trails to train on around here.

Same here. Great tire for sloppy conditions.

Kenda is the only true mud tire around these days. They do one called the King of traction. It would be great in the smaller 1.8 or 2.1 size. For a mud tire you dont want a big casing. Many years ago when I was racing for the NOVA junior development team and testing tires for specialized I asked for a mud tire since I had a very muddy race (snow not totally melted) coming up. Boy did they ever deliver. I got a tire with a 1.4" casing and knobs close to .5" long with huge spaces. It held a line even when leaned over corning in mud and slush. The start area it self was super muddy and seemed to have some clay so I used a silicone spray on the tires just before the start. Worked like a charm for the fist few hundred feet my tires picked up zero mud.

Conti also has a dedicated mud tire, the CrossCountry, which I ran until recently. Big, widely spaced paddle-shaped blocks on a 1.5" casing, and light at 450g each. I don't ride much in slop, but when I had to they killed in it. Apart from mud and moist dirt, they're not that great as a front tire. In the rear I found they make a surprisingly decent general purpose tire with one exception--I appreciate a little more cush on my hardtail.
