View Full Version : Price Opinion - Surly Single Speed Frame

Hi All -
Just throwing this out there, and looking for general opinion - I'm looking into buying a previously enjoyed Surly single speed frame (26" frame, unsure of actual model or year of manufacture), looks in good condition, that includes a rigid steel fork (probably OEM, but not a Surly fork, not sure if I'll use it - recommendations?), and stem. It's my size, too, tough to find a frame nearly big enough for me.
What do you think would be a fair and reasonable offer - $125-150?

Surly makes a nice frame at a reasonable price. For an inexpensive frame, they ride very nicely. They haven't changed much or at all since they started making them years ago. I'd check for rust inside the tubes. I'd also make sure that I put some rust inhibitor (FrameSaver) in the tubes before building it up.
That price sounds pretty reasonable. New ones go for around $400 for frame and fork. The forks are available new for about $60.
Hope that helps.

If stuff is in good condition a fair price is around half of the new price... so $400-$60 as its not the surly fork divide by two, low ball the offer a bit. Yeah $150 is right around there.
You can always look up the completed listings on ebay for a more accurate assesment.

If the fork isn't to your liking, I've got a brand new rigid fork that you can have at a reasonable price if you're interested.

I'm starting to think that Peter is secretly a Rigid Fork Retailer, I just bought one off him a few weeks ago and you got another- ha, ha!
BTW, great ride yesterday- it has been forever for me, thanks!

Thanks for all the advise - it's certainly not new, but the paint job looks in decent shape, and it's clean. No obvious rusting or pitting.
I was really trying to decide whether or not it would be better to leave the bike with a rigid fork, or put the Judy XC I'm currently using on my hardtail as the fork. I know that would sacrifice some out-of-the-saddle efficiency, but I also like the added comfort as I have some back problems to mind, and the suspension makes things more enjoyable. Forking out the $$ for a higher end fork with lockout is also out of the question right now.

have you ever tried a rigid fork with one of these?

might be the best of both worlds, especially for a SS.

no, not yet - I've been riding the Panaracer Fire XC's on my Giant NRS and hardtail for a couple of years. I've heard bigger tires are better on SS', though.

I've got a novel business model. Buy high, sell low. It seems to work for the US Government. ;)
To be honest, I like having spare parts around. There is NOTHING I hate more than missing a ride because I don't have parts. I tend to keep a little bit of everything around. That way I can fix almost anything that breaks.... on my bikes or on those owned by friends that I ride with.
Craig: You'd be surprised how great a rigid fork feels with a big spoogy tire under it.
In reference to my reply to Tom above, I probably have a spare rear wheel that you can borrow for a while. I just need to fix the axle on it. It'll get you on the bike a little sooner. I'd ultimately like to keep it as a loaner wheel, but you're a worthy person to loan it to for a month or 6.
Take care,
Pete

Yeah, I know all about that model - I'm a contracted Government buyer. Very glamorous profession.
I think I'll take you up on that offer; I had a wheel built though for my GT that is set up for single speed. Though, it's got the vertical drops, and the chain tension is really, really tight. Can I bribe you with beer to swap out a fork if I get the rigid and hate it?
Tire recommendations? Is the one below the WTB Weirwolf (sp?)?

i have heard of folks running a qr axel with a tugnut in leui of a solid axel with track nuts. from what i understand, if you get an allen key kind of qr there is minimal problems.. i can spot you a tugnut for now if you're in a pinch.

It's got a a QR on now (GT is now a SS) that's on pretty tight; taking it down to Lodi as a backup for my NRS in just in case (fingers crossed!), and I might take it out for a lap or two just to see what it's like. Thanks! :)

It is a Kona Project 2, Canti only, 1 1/8" steer, fork. Steer is new and uncut. It comes in any color you like, as long as you like black. :D The inside of the tubes have been treated with rust inhibitor. It comes with an optional star flange washer and instillation for a nominal pay-off with a beer-like substance.
I'm not looking to sell it. If I do, I'll just get a different fork to replace it as a spare, but if someone needs a fork pronto, I've got it. IM me for the price. I'll sell it for what I paid for it.

The tire below is a WTB Motoraptor. Great tire for this area. If you're sticking to buff stuff, the Mutanoraptor is great too. I'd go big if you're thinking of using the rigid fork. 2.4" tires are a good starting point. For someone of your weight, that should be perfect.
I'll happily swap out the forks for you. No problem at all. Let me know.
The wheel is pretty nice. It is a spot hub laced to a Sun Rhino Lite rim with DT 14/15g spokes. The wider rim gives the rear tire nice volume. I broke the axle on it last fall. Spot has since changed their axles from aluminum to stainless steel because I'm not the only person who broke the axles on their hubs. I've got the replacement axle already. I just need to actualy do the swap.
The only thing you'll need to get rolling will be a freewheel. I've probably got one, but it will be fairly short-lived since it is a farly well worn Shimano (Please insert a spare letter "t" in the appropriate place in the word "Shimano").
You might want to buy a shimano or ACS freewheel -- something cheap -- until you figure out what gear ratio you want to run. Once you have that figured, you can then invest $70 or so in a White Industries freewheel. It'll be the last freewheel you'll have to buy.
Hope that Hepps.

Oh, come on - talk dirty to me.... LOL
If I didn't have an inside scoop at my LBS, I wouldn't be buying anything, but this is a good deal, and it's my size, so I can minimize my investment on this little 'experiment'. If i like it, I'll probably sell the GT frame.

Oh, come on - talk dirty to me.... LOLA couple days ago Peter said, "Yes Mistress" to me on one of these threads. If you're willing to start there, we can go off line and pursue this a little *deeper.*
;) :D :p
Though at this rate, I'm gonna get a reputation here at MORE that's far beyond being squirrely!
The problem is, you guys just know how to bait me!
