There's a great color, waterproof topo map available from MD DNR for $3 (Avalon area) or the whole Patapsco Valley state park for $6. Click here (http://shopdnr.com/centraltrailguides.aspx)

Maps are well worth it and will last years.

Getting a Patapsco map is really good advice. If you're only going to ride Avalon the $3 map in the previous post link is what you want.

Even with the map you can still go astray, particularly on Rockburn Branch trail. You will be glad you bought the map.

Yeah, the park map is a good first step. It doesn't have every trail, but has enough to keep you from really getting lost. There are no official maps with every single trail, because many of the trails are not official in the park's eyes. Some are accepted, but others are not.

There are some folks who have made more up to date maps, and I am sure they will post up.
