Description
The Muddy Branch Trail is an out and back trail following the Muddy Branch Creek stream valley from Rt 28 to River Rd in Gaithersburg and North Potomac, MD. It offers beautiful views of the creek and a moderately challenging terrain.

Notes:
- As of spring 2010, the trail remains unfinished from Esworthy Rd to River. However, that portion is both flagged and blazed and open to riding, at your own risk of course.

- Coming from Esworthy and a little bit before reaching River Rd, you will see a fork in the trail. The right side leads to Blockhouse Point Park, while the left side leads to a fire road on the other side of River Rd that can take you to Pennyfield Lock and from there to the C&O Canal. You cannot get to the C&O Canal from Blockhouse Point.

- When you arrive at Query Mill Rd near Esworthy, ride to Esworthy, turn right on the bridge and ride on the road for about a 1/4 mile, just past the pipeline clearing. The trailhead is on the left side of the road. There is a sign right at the entrance.

Directions

If you are going from Rt 28 to River, you can park at the following locations:

- Dufief Dr on the right side just before the houses (max 3 cars)
- GSX building (old National Geographic building)
- Lakelands Park in the Kentlands

For the last 2 options, you will need to cross Rt 28. You can do so in a tunnel located right across the trailhead.

If you start from River, you can start at either Blockhouse Point Park or Pennyfield Lock.
