We're a little late in recapping this year's annual winter party and awards banquet, but after such a great event, we wanted to make sure we recognized all the hard work and dedication of the award winners and thank everyone who came out to celebrate MORE's accomplishments.
The turnout this year of was one of the largest in MORE's history, with well over 150 members, family and friends coming out to Gaithersburg to join in on the fun. MORE member Bob Caverly stepped in at the last minute to get us space at the new community club house in his development near Schaeffer. It provided a comfortably full setting for some a fine pot luck, where members caught up on last year’s rides and activities. Peter Beers got things moving with an investigative slideshow examining the perplexing mountain bike mystery of "where's Ricky" complete with dramatic natural vistas interspersed with fleeting glimpses of the apparently furtive Ricky.
Having finally located the apparently unawares Ricky who was innocently perusing the many varieties of beer in the kitchen, we moved on to the main event of the evening: the awarding of MORE's silver spoke and other awards to those who contributed so much to the club this year.
As always, there was no shortage of candidates for this year's awards. MORE members continued to raise the bar for overall participation in trail work and other events, putting in a record 3000-plus hours this year, with a record 40 people beating the 20-hour mark. For everyone who went to even one work day this year, this is something to be very proud of. MORE’s hard work on the trails has earned us the gratitude and trust of land managers and is a key reason why we have been so successful keeping trails open to mountain biking.
The MORE silver spoke awards are presented to members who made superior contributions to the club's mission. Awardees this year received a specially designed MORE Silver Spoke award fleece vest. This year's awardees were: Scott Scudamore, Austin Steo, Dan Hudson, Joe Foley, Nancy DeVore, and Susan Driano. Scott also received a special set of Chris King salt and pepper shakers in recognition of his special contributions to the mountain bike culinary arts. Without the work of these members, MORE would not be the club it is today.
Awards also went out to liaisons, land managers and others for special contributions to the club and to mountain biking in our area. Trail liaison of-the-year awards went to outgoing liaison Larry Camp for his work at Conway Robinson, and to James Corbitt for work in Maryland. Land manager awards recognize officials for exceptional work in supporting mountain biking and other recreational trail use at their parks. This year’s awards went to Walt Brown of Montgomery County and Bill Helwig of Wakefield for support in Virginia. MORE is deeply appreciative for the support provided by these and all land managers in our area parks.
Two shops were awarded shops of the year for their continued support of MORE's activities. This year's awardees, the Bike Lane and City Bikes, are stalwart supporters of MORE, and have contributed well over a combined $10,000 over the last year to MORE.
On the trailwork front, Dan Hudson was the top volunteer, putting in an incredible 198 hours over 33 days in 2004. He was followed by Austin Steo who contributed over 118 hours over 16 days. Mike Bender came in third, with 83 hours. All told, MORE members put in 3,000 hours on the trails last year. Along with the 40 members who qualified for the 20/20/20 award – 20 hours of trail work, $20 to IMBA and $20 to MORE, another 64 qualified for the Trail work bike raffle. Coordinated by City Bikes, Cannondale and Specialized each contributed a bike for the raffle. Austin Steo won the Specialized 120 Stumpjumper FS and Scott Scudamore won the Cannondale Single Speed. He donated it to Trips for Kids, and Cannondale will exchange the single speed for multiple kid’s bikes. IMBA donated two vests for another raffle, which netted over $500 for trail tools. An anonymous donor chipped in another $1,000 for tools. Bob Caverly won the Ride Leaders raffle of a $500 gift Certificate from the Bike Lane
And, last but not least, we moved on to the schwag table. We'd like to thank this year's schwag table contributors which included the Bike Lane, City Bikes, Trek, Bike Doctor and Spokes Etc.
All in all, the Winter Party was a warm reminder about the tremendous volunteers in MORE.
