Has anyone ever ridden Carvins Cove? I would like to put together a ride for some folks at work, and was thinking about Douthat, but Carvins Cove also looks nice. If anyone has ridden this area, are there cabins, or any other type of lodging out there?

Thanks
Brian

I've ridden there, but didn't camp. (We were staying with friends in Bedford). I seem to remember that there are 2 sides to enter the trails, but you need to buy a permit at the tackle shop. The tackle shop is not as close to the good trails, and I know there was more trail that I didn't cover in the couple hours I had that morning.

I think there is a guy on the this forum who goes by allencb who is from that area and might have some more info for you.

Here is a link to a trail website which offers a map and some information. I don't know well mapped it is, but it might be of some help to you.

I rode there a couple of years ago while the wife attended a semindar at Tech, so we were staying in Blacksburg, it was about a 30 minute drive to get to the trails. I think Douthat has more elevation, but the Cove had much steeper climbs from what I remember. There are some threads about the Cove in this MTBR forum:

Call this shop:
http://www.justtherightgear.com/

They are right next to the Cove, and sell the passes and have maps as well.

The cove has some wicked descents, but some brutal climbs as well. The trails are well marked.

Also if you plan to ride Sunday, buy your passes early, as I don't think any place that sells the passes is open on Sunday.

I (and StarCityMtb) used to live in that area and have ridden CC frequently. I don't know of any camping there, but you could always drive up to the National Forest (take rt311 over Catawba Mtn) and camp there (20 minute drive).

There are plenty of hotels in the area, but nothing real close to the trails.

As for where to ride there, I would get the pass from Just The Right Gear and park at the parking lot on that side (name escapes me, but it isn't far). If you go to the other side (marina side), you'll be riding a lot of gravel road type terrain before you hit the sweet single-track.

If you like climbing, start off with Hi-De-Ho. :D
