An early ride at Fountainhead.........wheels on dirt at 8 a.m.! We have some time constraints, so we need to be riding at 8 a.m. Look for the green Subaru....ah, who am I kidding? We'll be the only riders there at that hour!

Moderate pace, no drops.

Mike: I'll try and make it, sir. If my schedule allows, could you give me a lift there? I'm basically in between your house and FH. I'll know more this afternoon and e-mail you details if this works out.

Sorry, guys, I'm pulling the plug on this one....the weather goons have hosed me again: I was banking on having yesterday and today to dry the trail out, but it just won't stop precipitating.

Yeah. I was just going to suggest that. I went for a crack-ho dawn trail run this morning in the neighborhood and it was pretty soggy.

We'll try again soon.

Speaking of trail runs. How about we meet for a run instead. I was going to run tomorrow morning in Prince William Park. Start around 8 am and do 8 to 10 miles.

I have never been there but wow, what are Laurel Hill's trails composed of?

I cannot imagine anything around the Beltway is rideable, or at least rideable with a clear conscience.

80 % of the trails have been surfaced with 21a gravel and packed done with multi ton compactors. I am pretty conservative in my riding and Laurel Hill will be rideable tomorrow if we do not get any more rain.

Is LH indoors or something? How will it be dry by tomorrow?

Negative it just drains very well being as hardpacked as it is. The wooded sections not so much but all the field stuff does.

I've ridden Laurel Hill before, during, and right after a hard rain. It's better when it's damp.

Bring your cross bikes. Laurel Hill is kinda short, so I'll lead a post-ride ride on the CCT and some roads with a stop at Five Guys for burgers if anyone is interested.

Days like tomorrow are one of the reasons why Laurel Hill was built the way it was.

Be great if someone would take a moment afterwords to share a few words on conditions; what sections were bomber, which soggy/soft, etc.

I'd guess PowerStation & Slaughterhouse will be soggy, Giles Run Meadow questionable, and the rest wet but okay.

will do Dan. Those are my thoughts exactly on conditions for tomorrow

Power Station and Slaughter House hold up much better than Giles Run does. The puddles that form on Giles Run seem to be very solid underneath and don't seem to grow.

Should be a fun ride.

See y'all in the morning.

I'm not sure what the Giles Run lot is. Is it the main parking lot off of Lorton Rd?

Good ride today. there were definitely wet spots but most everything was solid. we did not return on the Giles Meadow trail since it was the softest. Slaughterhouse was in great shape. Power station was a little soft on the first 200 yards going clockwise other than that it was fine. Orchard was fast because you were not sliding on the gravel. The rest of the trails had some standing water but it was pretty solid underneath. We had about 25 people or so. we split into 3 groups thanks to Anne M and Pete for taking two groups. I took the third. We did the whole thing about 12 miles or so in 90 minutes.

Agreed. Giles Run was definitely sketchy in parts. There are a few of the right hand turns across rivulets that are a bit of mud on top of firm base.

First 200 yards of Power Station going clockwise and probably the last 50 yards before exiting. The bottom of each of those woops was pretty squishy. It might not be bad today, but if we had a ride like that in those conditions every day, they might loosen up a bit.

I didn't feel guilty for anything we rode today. I didn't go back for seconds on Giles Run.

Cross tires were on rails on that surface. Faster and better control than on Sunday.

There are a few small ruts forming on the last couple of turns on the downhill of the Orchard Loop going counter-clockwise. Nothing bad yet. Only us skinny tire guys would really notice them. They're forming where people have skidded, leaving the trail because they overcooked the off-camber tunrs.
