I am having a physical tomorrow for my life insurance policy. I am guessing it would be a bad idea to go pound beers and eat cheese fries from outback tonight, but is there anything else I should consider doing?

They basically just make sure you will not die soon. Nothing to worry about.

Not sure if it's the doctor that asks the questions or someone from the insurance company... but my financial advisor warns to only give them information that they ask for. You tell them "I'm a cyclist so I'm fit and healthy," but they hear "I ride off cliffs and weave in and out of traffic."

I've been told that it's rare that someone offers additional information and has it work to their benefit.

Very timely thread. I'm going through this process as well. I went to the lab yesterday so they could draw the samples and had my phone questionnaire 2 nights ago.

Don't volunteer any information you are not asked. The interviewer asked if I had been to my doctor for anything other than regular checkups and I said yes, for poison ivy. He gives me grief because he asked me a question earlier about skin disorders and said I answered "no". I told him poison ivy is not a disorder and that is why I answered the way I did. He said he had to list it and went back to the skin disorder question. :confused2:

The lab work is basically a drug test. They also test for high cholesterol and a bunch of other stuff. My test was at Qwest labs and done by a "technician", not a doctor. The tech left the room for a little and I read the instructions for how the blood samples were to be handled (included in the kit). She didn't follow any of them. :nono:

I wonder how my test will come out?

Yeah, leave out the bits about your part time gig as a cage fighter and any rashes you might have picked up years ago in Tijuana. :D

I had mine a few months back. My biggest worry was my blood pressure spiking because I was nervous about having low enough BP to get the best rates. My BP is usually good, but I get stressed easily. My strategy was to get a lot of sleep, smile a lot, and be friendly. This kept me happy and calm resulting in good BP.

I totally agree on not providing extra information unless asked. They asked me if I exercised and I said only that I go for a bike ride a few times a week, hoping they pictured a gentle ride on a paved path instead of anything in the woods.

Ha, that's funny. My test was supposed to be last Friday, the day after the Halloween ride.

I moved it to a nice safe Tuesday morning. ;)

The booze can spike your triglycerides (ask me how I know).

I suggest eating 3 heads of steamed cabbage before any physical.

You're welcome.

The lower your resting heart rate and blood pressure the better. My BP and HR go up after having my morning coffee. So avoid it if you can. Also, you can lower both temporarily if you do ½ an hour of an easy to moderate run/ride within an hour of the appointment. If you over train the opposite can happen.

she was impressed at how low my hr and BP was

It seems like they really just want to make sure you are not on drugs or have HIV
