I just got off the phone with Lake Cycling and today they received a shipment of their MXZ302 winter boots (http://www.lakecycling.com/). So if you have been looking for a size that is commonly out of stock (42 or 43 wide in my case), now would be the time to place an order from either their website or your LBS. Cold weather will be here before you know it. :)

I love my Lake MXZ 300s but taking them to the cobbler every winter season to repair the stichting between the upper and the heel counter is not what one expects from a supposedly top shelf product.

I just purchased a pair, but have not got them, yet. Strangely, I can't seem to find any reviews on them. I did read somewhere that they are good down to 32 F, but not sure if that is wet or dry. I decided to give them a shot, since our winters here aren't too extreme. During the winter, I do a lot of short commutes and road rides, where the other ones would be overkill. I also figured it would be nice to save $50+, and I would be able to wear them more often. I can always use booties or waterproof socks on the coldest days.

I mentioned the widely reported stitching problem to the Lake guy and he said it is no longer an issue with the MXZ302, the 2008+ design.

I had the problem where the stitching on the heel cup pulled away. Lake paid for it under warranty and I had to tell the cobbler something specific about the thread (40% stretch nylon or something like that). No problems since.

Please give us a review of them when you get them. What type of riding shoes do you normally wear?

They still haven't shipped.
In the past, I have got by with regular shoes and a combination of special socks and performance booties.
So performance has a screaming deal on the 302's, so I hedged my bets and ordered them, too.

I might end up returning one pair, or maybe I will do a long term side-side by comparison. I ride nearly everyday through the winter, so I figure I can justify the second pair. I think the MX140 will be great for commuting and destination road rides, while the 302's will be my choice for cold mountain rides with stream crossing.

I believe that the consensus here is to go one size larger than you normally wear. My problem with this is that I wear different size shoes from different manufacturers.
So, is anyone wearing Specialized Mountain Comps (or similar) and wearing the Lake Boots. If so, is there a size difference.

I have the same problem. Hell, everyone does. Each manufacturer uses their own last for sizing, so, you never know what you're gonna get.
My summer shoe is a Specialized MTB Comp as well. Unlike Lakes, they come in half sizes and I wear a 44.5. I have a pair of Lake 190's (that only come in full sizes) and got them in a 45. 44's would be too tight. The length of the Lake 45's is good, but, the ratchet strap bottoms out before they are tight enough. So, the shoe never feels truly secure and I get a little heel lift.
I ordered a pair of the 302's in a 45 (I did NOT go up a size) and I hope they will fit right. The Boa system is supposed to cinch down the heel cup and reduce lift. I hope that's not a bunch of marketing BS.

Who knows how accurate this info actually is... but without anything else to go on, I based my latest size decision on this chart from Performance. I figure there's gotta be some truth to it...

I have Specialized Mountain Comps in 42 and the Lake MXZ302s in 43.
The Lake's have a touch more room, but not a ton. With a winter weight cycling sock they are perfect. In researching the Lakes, some people order 2 sizes up so they can fit a really thick sock or 2 pairs of socks. The Lakes have worked so good for me that I have never needed that and I don't like riding with thick socks.
The BOA system works really well. I'd like to get a pair of regular Lakes with the BOA system for summer.
And everyone reading this thread that is looking at the Lake MXZ302s but doesn't like the high price tag -- just spend the money get them. They are well worth every cent. You spend $$$$$$$$$ dollars on your bikes, get a decent set of winter boots and make your feet happy.

Don't hesitate, folks. If you are on the fence this is the moment to pull the trigger.

It's easy with the BOA system to cinch them too tight, causing circulation to be cut off, something you'll want to avoid.

The Lakes are water resistant, but not completely waterproof. If you step in a stream, they can leak.

My MXZ302-X (wide) boots arrived and I just finished trying them on. My main cycling shoes are Sidi Dominator Megas in a 42. I also wear Northwave Lizzards in a 42. I ordered the Lake boots in 42 and 43 and ended up going with the 43 mainly because the outside bone behind my little toe fit better. This is my main issue with any shoes. I tried them on with medium and heavy cushion Smartwool hiking socks and the Boa system provided a good fit with all the socks. Heel lift was minimal. Like others have said, these are VERY comfortable boots.
When getting my RMA to return the 42s, I inquired about the other model and Chris the Lake guy said that the MXZ140s are meant to be more of a spring and autumn all-weather shoe with the highlight being that they are waterproof. He did mention that they should be warm down to 30 degrees though and they are his regular commuting shoes in Skokie, just north of Chicago. So they might work out well for Jon.

After following the thread on the Performance $150 dollar deal, I decided late last week to get a pair. I went to the web site and they were listed at $229. Doh! Missed it. Today, I was browsing their site, and I went to the shoes section, found Lake, and they were listed there at $219 .... okay looking better, but still not that amazing deal. Then I clicked on the link to take me to the actual shoe page just to look at them closer. It took me a couple of minutes, but I noticed that they are listed there for $149 ... can it be? I find my size, add to the cart ... yep. $149 still. Sold.
So even if you see on the 'summary page' for lakes, the actual page still sells them for $149. Maybe NOW my feet will stay warm in the winter.

The shoes are still there, still $150, but today they have 15% off for veterans day. They are out of stock for sizes 44, 46 and 47 but the other sizes (41-43, 45) are there. Comes out to $127.50 plus tax, not bad. If you ship to the store you don't have to pay shipping. And another 10% back in points if you're a team member.

Has anyone used these and the Pearl Izumi Barrier winter boots? I have some older Lakes and was looking to upgrade.
