In an effort to extend my network of climbing buddies I figured to throw something out here. Anyone else a climber?

Yes... Although, I don't think I would call my self a climber. Let's say I really like climbing, but not necessarily good at it. Kind of like mountain biking. Also, I need to go more often.. Hopefully, with the bad weather approaching, I will...
If we want indoors, we usually go to Rockville earth treks. Although, the Columbia one is looking very interesting with all the renovations. Outside, usually top rope great falls and carderock and annapolis rock. Sometimes boulder at Northwest branch.
Where do you go usually?

I do not go to Earth Treks as often as I should. I have a membership, I've just been so busy the last few months I really have not had the time to go. I usually do one big outdoor trip a year, either to New England or somewhere out west. Since leaving college 3 years ago, I've really be out of climbing and pretty much just ride a bike. I just got back from a trip to Wyoming and have the climbing bug again.

I find that it's really hard to do both mountain biking and climbing. At least, to do both well.
When the weather is good, all I want to do is ride. When the weather is bad, all I want to do is climb.
For me, the issue is that neither sport strengthen's me for the other. In general, I'm fairly strong, but not nearly so as those who concentrate on one sport or the other.

We're going to be practicing some self-rescue at GF Nov 7th if the weather is good (dry) and we find an open spot to set up a decent top belay. If weather is bad we'll just find a pavilion or a big tree and sling up some ropes. You're welcome to join us. We probably won't do a lot of climbing though, just tying lots and lots of munter mules and prussics. But we could always use more "victims!"
There's also talk of a race to see who can set up and ascend a rope the fastest without any mechanical devices. Oh yeah, good times. :p
Do you ice climb? Lots of trips planned to NH already.

Yep. I keep my climbing to indoors at Sport Rock in Alexandria. Just top rope or boulder. Haven't learned to lead yet.
Cycling is expensive enough for me.

If I'm local I would be down for this. I do ice climb, alot. I'm more into general alpine climbing/ mountaineering and often make trips to NH each winter. There is a good chance I'm transferring to Denver at the beginning of Dec. but if I'm still here I'd like to get up to NH. I have a couple good spots out in western PA and WV if we wanna get out for a day trip.

Moved here a couple of months ago from Seattle where I did a lot of climbing, both cragging and alpine. I normally lead 5.9 alpine, 5.10 trad cragging, and WI4.
However, I took a lead fall on an ice climb in Alaska in May resulting in a fractured tibia and fibula:

Practice your self - rescue skills with Tania, fools! Prussiking with a broken leg with a lot of spindrift coming down on you is not easy, but made easier if you know what you're doin'. Also is escaping the belay (which my partner successfully did).
It took a few months to heal from the injury / surgery, and I just got off the couch and onto the bike right around the time I moved here. I'd be interested in cragging and hitting the gym.
I'm definitely not a 5.10 leader right now, but looking to get my 'lead head' back and learn where the local spots are.
As a result of living up there and climbing all the time, I'm armed to the teeth in terms of a rack and ropes.
P.S. NH is great for ice climbing, but the Canadian Rockies are better:

I've forgotten more about climbing than I ever knew. I used to climb a lot till I tore a tendon in my arm which was the oh so gentle push for me to focus on just mountain biking. I got rid of all my lead climbing gear, but still have the basics. Not so much interested in indoor climbing anymore but come spring would be interested in some outdoor climbing.
jared_j - looks pretty awesome. glad that fall wasn't worse.

Damn, that was one hell-of-a-story! I would have needed a new pair of pants if I launched over the edge like that.

I've been out of leading rock for about 5 years, but recently have had a fire lit under me arse to get back into it. I guess its just a matter of getting the climbing muscles back to be comfortable to lead again. Most of my trad rack has been let go, but I'm still fully armed for ice and sport climbing. Sounds like we could get a good group together for some trips. I agree with you Jared, the ice out west is sick. Banff is on my 5 year to do list.

I guess it's the wrong time of year to be making rock climbing plans, but I'd be game for clear weather days this fall when the trails are too muddy to ride.

Fortunately no need for a wardrobe change after the fall :P
I'm looking forward to getting as much mileage as possible out of this story as an excuse to descend like a wussy wuss ;)

A bunch of us went down to the NRG and took a self rescue class last weekend. I also took a quasi self-rescue class with ET a few weeks ago. Escaping the belay is key -- odds are if you can't lower them (i.e., you're multi-pitching or leading or top belaying) and you can't haul them up on your own, you're going to have to leave them hanging and go get help.
We're probably going to do this type of "refresher day" once every month or so since rope skills deteriorate without use.
Glad you're ok jared!
I'll post more info when I have it re: where and when on the 7th.

I get vertigo looking at that kinda stuff. I still think its nuts. I hate heights. These pics put me over the edge of that thought process.
