View Full Version : Bike finds for those looking for used DH/FR bikes

Hey I know there are a couple of guys presently looking for bikes without blowing their budget. If you are looking for such a bike you can post here, and those who want to post links to their finds post them up.

Here is one semi local I found for a good price:
http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/479845/

The guy will be at Snowshoe this weekend with the bike.

...considering how much traffic is around the FH forum inquiring about bikes.

my contribution for those looking (http://www.transitionbikes.com/Home.cfm?C=1&CFID=2381940&CFTOKEN=14618995) to spend 3000-4000 on a brand spanking new FR bike that's pretty much indestructible. Rider range include clydes to sub-5-footer riders of the fairer sex (there's quite a few ladies on here that are adrenaline junkies!).

edit: btw oldskool, that bike suuuurrreee looks familiar...

It's one like my brother has. Pretty solid bike, only thing is they develop a little slop in the bottom shock mount which is very hard to cure, but doesn't really affect the ride.

EDIT: and the link you post Phil just goes to the TR main page.

Great idea and thanks for starting this,

Turns out the Curnutt on my Foes is definitely blown out and it will be a few weeks to have it rebuilt. What better reason to justify me buying a "backup bike"? If anyone's selling a DH or FR bike for fairly cheap that can handle the runs in this area and places like Snowshoe (mind you I'm fairly new so I'm not exactly taking on big road gaps....yet) please let me know. Thanks!

If anyone wants a mini-DH bike: http://classifieds.mtbr.com/showproduct.php?product=40442&cat=3

Intense SS sized small, complete bike, in the most badass color (raw). $2400 for well spec'ed USA-made bling.

Here's another mini-DH bike: Giant Reign X, 6.7" of travel, on Hadleys $3000

I'm selling my sinister r9 shorty, 2006. Boxxer, Avid Code, Vivid, etc. Very cheap- thinking 1300 obo. Keeping it until late october or november. Great backup, I'm 5'8'' and it fits well. PM for details. Great on rocky trails and bike parks- diablo, shed, 7springs, bromont, snowshoe, etc.

I've been doing quite a bit of internet scrubbing after just coming back from BC and riding my first Freeride and Downhill ever! Squamish, Whislter, Barniby, Mt. Seymour! Wow!

My budget is about 1k, which is about a 1k too much <lol>, but I've found some great deals on Ebay, Ride Monkey, MTBR, & NSMB.

A Bullit is bombproof and cheapish, some for some Kona's.

I have a 2004 Giant DH Team frame which would be a decent foundation for a starting rider. It's a medium but pretty big. Includes headset, rear wheel (offset 12x135 specific to the frame) E13 SRS guide and cranks/BB. Price negotiable.

Randy from Black Rock is letting the dirtbag frames go for a song. Way less than what's listed on their close out page. If you call him, please tell him I sent you. He can hook you up with some cheap fox forks too.

I had to ask him to repeat the price of the db frame. Tempting to switch, but I want a pink syren.

While you can surive on the DB (mine is a size small frame), I think the Syren's tube length will allow you to really maneuver it around more easily than my DB. On the DB, you would be a passenger on the bike, more or less, instead of the pilot.

Trust me, once you have it built up, you're outlook on riding will definitely change.

I got my free vp for a pretty sick price but it was a lot of hunting a bit of traveling to get it. I'm pretty happy thus far, just gotta get used to a diffrent ride 8" of fork travel is soooo diffrent form the 3.5" or so of the TALAS I had, and plush as a mo fo.

Delmar is correct. I am letting go my DH steed. It is a mountaincycle 9.5 with a pushed DHX size medium. Ideally I would like to just sell the frame, headset, seatpost and spare drop outs but I will also sell it complete or just frame and fork.

Asking $650 for the frame
$1150 frame and fork
$1650 complete

Dr Phil mmkay

Because gripshifts are for old guys with back problems and gray hair (or no hair) who cling onto the olden days when they had to walk 10 miles to school, barefoot, in the snow, uphill both ways.

It may be surprising to him because most of the DH bikes he's seen run trigger shifters.

I will put Grip-Shift up against any POS shifters you run. Especially any Shimano shifter ever made. You obviously have never have tried them. You DH Dorks don't know crap about bikes. except how to over build a bike that causes you to have a heart attack if you have to pedal it for more then a mile or up anything over a 100th of 1 percent grade. Btw what is up with all that MOTO looking gear you dorks wear. Do you think it makes you all Gnarly and Radical? Most of you dorks can't even pedal around Wakefield without stopping 30 times to catch your breath.

BTW it's Christmas Eve and I want to Fight :)

Funny, this DHer runs grip shift & I bet I could ride circles downhill around most of you guys... I'll be sure to make moto grip shift sounds when I pass you trying to flick your fingers to shift while you worry about how cool your gear is, how light your ride is, or making sure your suspension is perfectly dialed...

Ride on... Nothing to see here!:D

PS: when you've crashed enough on your thumbs to the point where they don't function to trigger shift... Grip shift is the way to go & I guess you can feel cool with the "old" crowd at the same time!!

I got into mountain biking late enough to 1. not be as fast as the more experienced riders yet, and 2. not have to learn to appreciate how grip shifters are "character-building".

No need to rub two sticks together if you're got a pocket full lighters. :p

Merry Christmas guys and gals!

Merry Christmas guys and gals!I guess you are not into never missing a shift or very rarely having to adjust your shifty bits.

If trigger shifters are a pocket full of lighters then I suggest you rub two sticks together.

But the best method is to get rid of all shifty bits and go SS.

I actually know of a freerider (Mike, the owner of Pedal Shop) in the area who runs a grip shifter for his front derailleur and trigger for the rear. That one Swedish dude who was the back to back 5-6 time winner of the Megavalanche also runs a similar set-up. But since I no longer run a front derailleur on my Dirtbag I guess my X.0 trigger shifter will do just fine. Only problem I've ever had with those is the thumb pad may bend slightly in a crash. other than that shift quality is still good (I run full housing), and a few turns of the barrel adjusters are all that's needed.

The new Shimano group sets seem fine to me as well. There's a bunch of ppl who run Shimano on here who may chime in on shift quality.

But the best method is to get rid of all shifty bits and go SS.

Hah! Thanks for the good laugh on X-mas morning.

;)I run whatever cheap grip shift that I've gotten from past hookups... x7, x9, whatever. I don't see what difference it makes regarding shifters except after having non-functional thumbs & several broken trigger shifters from crashes... It becomes a no brainer. Then again, if I just started using a computer yesterday I might think that windows 7 is the best thing ever & that whatever sam hill & dh racers do is the best thing ever as well while I'm posing to be the know it all...;)

I don't even know why we bother with pedals & cranks on DH bikes anyways because apparently pedaling is not necessary... Much like suspension & gears on those fancy $8000 titanium rigs fellas are running these days to ride technical stuff. Oh yeah... To each his/her own! :D

are you thinking about getting that Brett? the pivot and BB area are overbuilt, crazy strong and laterally stiff. it was an under-rated frame IMHO. and the price is right if the frame is truly in good condition. the manitou travis fork isn't the best, but still a good deal.

Those Diablo bikes might be a good deal, depends on if they will have a warranty from Jamis or not, and how trashed the bike got from noobs riding at Diablo.

The component specs look good.. but you definitly would want to read more about the frame.. and more importantly see it in person then think about it carefully before buying. Don't impulse buy it, give it serious consideration.. 2K is alot.

My first squishy bike turned out to be a rental. I didn't find out about that till I got it via ebay.. and I have to say, I wish I had been able to see it before buying it. There's lots of small things that are not visible and can't easily be fixed.. such as slopping linkage components on the rear triangle, etc.
