Outmoded and hazardous Union Dam faces demolition starting in a few weeks

By Arthur Hirsch

September 6 2009

Since Tropical Storm Agnes ended its working life abruptly in 1972, Union Dam has stood in the Patapsco River as a broken monument to a bygone industrial era, but it's also an obstacle to migrating fish, a swimming hazard and a potential threat to a large sewer pipe.

Kind of a shame they are taking it out. I always thought that it was kind scenic and had historical value. I guess I'll have to take one more photo expedition out there before the heavy equipment rolls in. Not really sure how they are going to get that stuff down there really. The Union Dam Trail is too steep and narrow. Not really sure what is on the other side of the river though.

Isn't there basically a old overgrown fireroad that goes down from Rt 40 from the eastern end of the bridge?

Could be. I have never hiked around the eastern side.

Here is the dam.

There is a old road on the east side. There was some kind of clearing and/or grading done to it this year, so maybe that is the entry point for the equipment. It looks like you could drive a pickup or similar vehicle down there right now. They just need to clear the brush to get to the dam itself now.
