There is a new multi-use trail system going in in Prince William County. The Silver Lake property is a new asset in the PWC Park Authority that will host trails for equestrians, hikers, and bikes along with the beautiful lake and lakeside amenities. The county is busy renovating the property to tear down old buildings and construct new facilities. MORE is working with the Prince William Trails and Streams Coalition to begin construction of a new trail system consisting of a perimeter trail suitable for beginning bikers, strollers, and horses along with interconnected miles of more challenging singletrack. Contruction is set to begin this Saturday, Aug 22nd, 9am-3pm, and a second workday next Saturday, the 29th, same time.
Rick Holt, MORE's asst Liaison for Locust Shade Park, will be leading MORE's efforts at Silver Lake. The Nokesville Horse Society will have a small bobcat-like machine to carve the main trail and we will need a good trunout to help clear the corridors and dress the main trail after it's scraped. As time permits, we may gety to siting and construction of the first singletrack loops, as well.
As usual, bring water and wear sturdy shoes and gloves. Ticks are plentiful in the brush, so long pants and bug spray is a good idea, as well.
Silver Lake is located about a mile north of route 55 on Antioch Rd in Haymarket. You'll enter through a gate and drive down a gravel road back to the lake where Jane Hampton of PWTAS will be there coordinating volunteer efforts.

Come join the Prince William Trails and Streams Coalition, Nokesville Horse Society, and the Prince William County Park Authority from 9AM to early afternoon on Saturday, August 22nd to help prepare Silver Lake, the County’s newest park, for its grand opening this October!
Silver Lake is a 233 acre parcel located Northwest of Haymarket, accessible off Antioch Rd, past the Gainesville Volunteer Fire Department. The property also adjoins Dominion Valley to the East. Silver Lake will be open this fall for trail use, bank fishing, picnicking, and more. You can help get Silver Lake ready for the public by helping clean up debris littering the property and re-establishing miles of trails.
Established in 2006, Prince William Trails and Streams is a non-profit coalition of passive recreation trail users, dedicated to establishing and promoting a County-wide system of trails and blueways that connect parks with our communities. Please join us as volunteers at Silver Lake, and if you would like to volunteer on other trail work and cleanup days regularly sponsored by PWTS, please contact PWTS at pwctrails@gmail.com, or visit their web site at www.pwtrailsandstreams.com.
