We have a new park open to mountain bikes in Maryland: Muddy Branch in west Montgomery County. Soon a multi-use trail will allow travel up and back between Route 28 in Gaithersburg to the tow path along the C&O canal next to the Potomac River.
There is one problem--It needs to be built and some old trail closed and/or rerouted. That’s where you come in. No matter what you have planned for Saturday, April 23, please consider helping construct the trail at Muddy Branch Park. This is a park initiated project. We need your help. We had a very poor volunteer turn-out to finish the Hoyle’s Mill Connector trail last week. As a result, North Hoyle’s Mill will remain closed CLOSED until further notice. We need to show our support for new trail by helping construct new trail.
Please respond to the MNCPPC volunteer coordinator, Naomi Manders—listed below—for further details and to let her know you will help. Your hours count towards 20/20/20 awards.

Begin construction of natural surface trail between Potomac Horse Center and Route 28 on the east and west side of the stream. The trail on the east side will be open to equestrians and hikers only. The trail on the west side is open to all non-motorized users. We will use portions of the existing system as well as build some new trail. Both sections of trail are approximately 1-1/2 miles long. Work entails basic gardening skills such as raking, pruning and hand sawing of small limbs, removal of trash, etc.
WHAT TO BRING
Water, lunch and snacks. Dress in layers. Bring work gloves, wear sturdy shoes (some small streams to cross) and long sleeved shirt (no shorts please) Sunscreen and insect repellant probably are a good idea.
MNCPPC will provide tools but if you have a favorite pruner, leaf rake or other tool, please bring it.
NEXT WORKDAY: May 14
This trail will provide recreational opportunities for residents of Potomac, Rockville, and Gaithersburg as well as visitors from our other Parks. Please plan to join us for the construction effort. It will be a rewarding experience for all!
