Hey, when I was finishing up my ride last Sunday @ about 1 p.m. there was a MORE guy there reading the riot act to a group of Frederick freeriders. I didn't get to hear the whole conversation, but I got the impression that there were some access issues because of the new freeride trails up there. Does anybody know anthing about this?
Thanks,
Dave

That would be me. And I wouldn't say I read anyone the riot act. Shoot, I did more listening than talking!
As some may know, access to the Frederick Watershed works a little differently than other places we ride:
- It's not a park, and recreation is secondary to its being a water supply.
- The land is owned by the City of Frederick but daily management is handled by MDNR from an off-site office.
- By design, there is only one blazed trail (blue-blazed Catoctin trail), though there are many other roads & trails available.
Since it's such a great place and popular with so many different types of users, there has historically been a bit of a tug-a-war over access. Back in the late 90's, MTBs even came close to having their riding privileges in the Shed taken away! The fall is when most disagreements arise - the weather is nice so more people are out than ever, hunting season is underway which adds another user-group to the mix, and MDNR tend to be more available as they poke around keeping an eye on hunters.
Anyway... MORE's leadership is a bit concerned that this season a few of the folks who have a history of not being fond of MTBs in the Shed might take issue with some of the freeriders who've been enjoying the trails recently. After I finished up a ride at Gambrill on Sunday, I cruised thru Hamburg Rd on the way out to let the FR-crowd know what's up. Unfortunately, MORE is lacking in active members who seek out big drops!
The club is just trying to keep on top of access. We're all mountain bikers, after all. And the Shed is a special place we all want to keep healthy and open for years to come.
