Imagine how thrilled an underprivileged city kid would be to go mountain biking. Imagine how thrilling it would be to be the one who introduces that child to the sport. Trips for Kids Metro DC makes that happen over and over again. Now, the group needs more volunteers to continue growing its successful program.
TFK Metro DC is a non-profit operation whose volunteers supply kids with the fun that we as mountain bikers enjoy each and every time we ride. Our rides teach kids the importance of a healthy lifestyle, the environment around them, and most of all that riding a bike is FUN! Long after their adventure is over, the kids keep with them a sense of accomplishment, fond memories, and new knowledge about themselves and their environment.
Now in its third year as a non-profit organization, TFK needs help to build on its success. More volunteers are needed to lead rides, transport kids, teach skills and bicycle safety, make lunches and organize trips. The time commitment for each ride is about 4 hours. We expect to have a ride or two every other week, and are also planning a week long mountain bike camp.
This year, we are launching a Reward Program for volunteers and ride leaders. How does this work? Volunteers will receive points for each ride. At the end of the season the volunteer with the most points will get first pick from the prize table. Certified Ride Leaders will receive double points. And those who have volunteered for two or more rides will also get to pick from the prize table. There will be some great donated items from REI, The Bike Lane, and others. But of course, it is not all about the schwag. It is about sharing your joy of mountain biking with some kids who would otherwise not have the experience.
You may check out the TFK website to learn more and to see our ride schedule at www.tfkmetrodc.org. If you are interested, please contact me, I will be delighted to schedule you on one of our rides. Please contact me at Annelbv@yahoo.com.
Please make TFK part of your riding and make a HUGE difference in a kid’s life!
