View Full Version : Weekly Ride April/May Oasis Bike Works/MORE Tuesday Night Rides

The Tuesday Night Casual ride is brought to you by MORE and Oasis Bike Works. (www.oasisbikeworks.com)
This is a casually-paced night ride at Wakefield Park (http://www.more-mtb.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1202) in Annandale, Virginia, adjacent to the intersection of Braddock Road and the Capitol Beltway. Riders should meet at 6:30 and be ready to ride at 6:45. The ride leader(s) will try to start as promptly as possible.
Folks who aren't ready will be forced to buy the first round at Kilroys.
Lights are needed! You will need quality bike lights to participate in this ride. Starting at 6:45 gives us a little while with sunlight, but you'll need them for longer rides.
Riders are strongly urged to purchase a hydration pack and use it. A single water bottle is not sufficient, even in cooler temperatures.
Pace: This ride, part of a regular series of night rides organized by MORE, is geared toward the beginner or casual rider. Newcomers to night riding should feel welcome - this is a no-drop ride. (A drop is leaving someone behind who is slower than the group. We won't do that - but if you feel like you are not able to keep up, please let the ride leader know.) All riding abilities are welcome, but it is recommended riders have a few off-road daylight rides (http://thebikelane.com/page.cfm?PageID=53) under their belts first. Feel free to contact one of the ride leaders if you have any questions.
As an alternative, there may be faster rides each Tuesday night starting from the same place at the same time. These rides are not part of the casual ride. There are also faster rides on Mondays and Thursday, the other days with legal night riding. The group typically breaks up into casual and casual +.
Location: The ride starts near the Wakefield Park recycling bins, located in the parking lot of the Audrey Moore Recreation Center. (http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/rec/wakerec.htm) Please park near the large green recycle bins. Click the thumbnail below for an overhead image of park entrance/starting area.

Braddock Road Entrance
Terrain: Wakefield is generally considered easier to intermediate by most riders. There are a few small stream crossings and some log obstacles. Riders should use good judgment and dismount when in doubt. The ride will typically consist of a mix of singletrack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singletrack), fireroads, (http://tinyurl.com/2uk8qq) and other trail sections in the park. There are some climbs that some people may find challenging, but they are few in number. Volunteers have put a lot of 'sweat equity' into maximizing the trails in Wakefield.
All riders joining this ride will need to sign the standard MORE waiver form. (http://tinyurl.com/ylzmeo)

Assuming the ride is on...does anyone have an extra light they could bring? I have a friend that wants to come out for his first night ride.
Thanks

Well'p, it probably comes as no surprise that yesterdays 18 hours of rain are still evident today. Ride cancelled for 04/21/09.

C'mon Jan (doesn't have the same hook like come on Eileen but it will do). Please tell me we are on for tomorrow. Don't tell me dust or ruts have canceled the ride.
I need me some ride time.

Dude, I'm absolutely going to be there with my pearly white...new bike (http://www.konaworld.com/09_one20supreme_en.cfm)! It got its maiden voyage at Fountainhead on Sunday and was quite a delight. Preloading the suspension for logs hops was a little weird at first since I've literally doubled the amount of travel in the fork, but once I got used to it...
See y'all tomorrow. Tuba, I imagine there will be a large enough turnout to require your services (particularly for the faster riders) - glad you'll be available.

Well, up until about an hour ago, it was looking good. Now I'm not so sure - it's raining pretty good here in Fairfax City at the moment.
I guess one could say it's not looking good anymore. We'll see how long this lasts and what tomorrow has in store.

We can always ride the non-singletrack trail to Rt 50 and back. I'd be up for that.

You can also head south and see how close to Laurel Hill you get before turning around.......
Remember, both the cross county trail and Accotink Park will be legally open to riding untill 8:42 PM (Sunset is 8:12 PM).

I might throw the CX tires back on the fixie and do this one. That and a 20 tooth cog.

It looks like the Monday night ride was canceled at WF...before the rain came. :confused2: Must be pretty bad out there now.

Good chance though I don't know how much Wakefield got last night. I'm still planning on riding something.

Well, I packed the mtb. If dirt at Wakotink is a no-go, I'll just ride laps around the parking lot and sob. I have ridden all of 10 miles offroad in the past two months.

There are crushed stone/paved trails that hold to the weather pretty well. We will have several miles of trails to ride.

I don't have much more. I got about 6-8 miles last night @ LH. Trails there were good.

I guess I'll try and make it out there for a make shift ride - but unfortunately I can't guarantee that I will, depending on how things go at the shop today.
GotGills: today might be the perfect day to get a feel for the riding style of some of the people who make it out regularly. It will also be a good day for you to get a "trail" ride in on your clipless pedals!

Yeah I think I am going to show up for a ride this afternoon, although it might be a little before the MORE ride.
I took the pedals out for a spin (haha) last night at Burke Lake to practice clipping in and out. Holy cow what a difference. You, sir, Rock.

Cool! If I can get outta here, I'll still be stumped on which bike to take. JTS or One20?

I can get one of those kids seats installed on the back of Tom's bike for you to ride in. With the handle bar streamers and pink helmet it'll fit right in.

I think the mtb trails at Wakefield are going to need another day like today to become rideable. I believe we'll be sticking the CCT, unless anyone has been there today for a report?

Not looking good for me. I'm stuck on a conference call and it'll take me an hour to get to Wakefield once I get off the phone.

I'm packed for a dirt ride as well. I think today's sun and mild temps should make the high spots dry enough.

Yep. I'll be there too. Last week was fun riding some of Accotink and rolling out on the CCT...we'll see how it looks.

We need to repair some of the winter rutting and low spots. I admit I have not ridden WF for about a month (it's been wet!), but the last time I did ride it there were spots that were wet for no other reason then that they had "sunk" several inches over the winter and were holding water. Same deal over at FH in a couple of locations. The best time to find these spots it right after a decent size rain.

Next week would be a great time to take care of those spots.

So far - Not a sole signed up for working that week. (Except me)
On the lighter side, I spent 4 hours walking around the Park with Rich, Dan, Mike and Tom Kennedy on Monday. Moving that bottom berm is gonna be fun!
As for a trail report:
The berms and the Phase III ascent hill were dry as well as Phase I, Phase IV and most of Phase II (With the normal puddles of standing water). As mentioned - the stream valley had been under water and was a mess. Salamander and 495 sux'ed egg poo)

I'll be there for 1 or 2 afternoons, just need to coordinate w/ work. Probably Tues/Thurs so I can ride afterwards. And I'll be out there for the Sat session as well.
