Geez, I have two Chris King Wheel sets...one is money light on the spousal units MTB, the other is built with Rhynolite wheels...both are non-disc compatible.

As I was thinking of upgrading all the household rides to disk brakes- I was wondering about what I was going to do with all the CK Wheelsets I have- ha, ha!

I think I have a solution- but that isn't a thought I ever considered having...

Ha, ha...

I feel your pain.

Go disc up front only. 80% of the benefits for 50% of the the full upgrade cost.

I hear you on Discs up front- beside modulation, I think the number one selling point (er, aside from stopping power for my fat-arse) is they sure get dirty a lot less then rim brakes...in particuliar the rear.

In fact, when helping friends purchase new bikes- oh, I go off on the benefits of discs, stopping power, modulation, blah, blah, blah- then I mention on the pads last longer, they rarely get dirty and they require less care and feeding once they are set up and folks eyes light up and they want disc brakes- ha, ha!

Dude Peter you are the man again! I have my road wheels built up with 36 Spoke CK's...I'll swap those hubs out for 32spokes... I'll save tons of dough...

Anyone want to put dibs on some money touring wheels- ha, ha?

PLEASE STOP Praising him... ;)

Before we know it he'll be towting his 1,200th post...

On the disc note. I upgraded my anvil to discs front and rear and My Moho CXS to discs just in the front - having the disc only in the front has made loads of difference and it was half the cost :)

Not sure how the cable discs are, but I have HOPE mini's and they are rock solid - can;t believe I held out so long...

You know, those thingamajigs - the whatsits that do that thing to those things, that mean you can do the other thing with them.

ARGH! There is a little $29 thing you can buy that simply attaches to any standard non disc hub, and converts it to a disc hub. Trying to remember what it's called...

You need to put up a new counter for me -- One for my overall number of posts, the other for the number of useful posts. I'm at 738 overall posts, and 4 useful ones. I might be a bit optimistic on the useful posts.

I'm a hydraulic brake kinda guy. I've got two sets of Hope Minis and I love them. I set up Gary's bike with some Avid Mechs a few weeks ago and I was really impressed by how well they worked. Agreed, I was basically tearing around my neighborhood on a minibike behaving like an imbicil, but they had good grab and broke in pretty quickly. I liked the way the Avid Full Metal Jackets worked too. They were a pain to install, but they made the brakes feel pretty dang good.

PS: To make sure this doesn't get classified as a useful post, here's a pic of my brother and I on our way to church.

I've run Avids and Hayes through the years and I'm a huge Fan of Avid Mechanicals- simplicity in design, application and maintenance...one could argue that Hydraulics win on the maintenance angle- however, have you ever tried bleeding brakes and dealing with all the fluids...there is no luv in that endeavor at all! Avid Mech w/ their Flak Jacket System works great...I normally swap cables every two years (I don't ride my bike underwater or in intense muck often).

Although, this has not occured to me- trail side maintenance solutions seem more feasible w/ a mechanical design then hydraulic.

Per the Hayes Discs I used a couple of years ago, I also found that via Speed Dial brake levers and the adjustability of the Avid Disc brakes one could dial in the feel to where you like it much more easily and with more precision then with the H-Hayes. Avids have worked so well the thought of experimenting w/ the new Hydro systems have not entered the mind...not to mention the cost savings associated to going to disc brakes.

As for the disc conversion kit- my 230+ arse doesn't make me too inclined to try that solution...
