I'm making my way into the 2x9 world and I'm running (well, attempting to) run a 2x9 set up (32-22 upfront) and (32-11 on the rear) for starters....
So I went to Park Tool's website and have done both equation methods and then threaded the chain through the derailleurs to finish the installation only to notice that the rear derailleur is radically extended too short every time. Am I missing something here or does anyone have any advice on how to get it correctly sized?
Chainstay length = 16.75"
Biggest Chainring (32)
Biggest Rear Cog (32)
Thanks!

I've always put the chain on the biggest cog and biggest ring (not through the derailleur), checked the length and added 2-4 links from there. In the big-big combo, the rear derailleur should be pulled almost straight forward.
If you run a full suspension, make sure you also account for any chain growth as the suspension cycles.

An online calculator that worked fine for me is available here. (http://www.machinehead-software.co.uk/bike/chain_length/chainlengthcalc.html) Be sure to measure your maximum chainstay length if you are running FS.

Large-Large + 2 has always worked for me on my FS.
I'm gonna switch to a 2x9 soon w/ a bashgaurd, but I am leaving my FD and chain length set for 3 chainrings, since there are some races where I will want to put the 3rd ring back on.

Thanks for the quick and easy link toonces..........
I also debated going full length in the event i DO want to put a 3rd ring back on but I think I'll just stick to what I have for now. Thanks guys!

I even went a step further and switched to a mid-cage derailleur. I think I was able to take out an extra link that way too. Shifting is crisper and chain slap down. I don't use the big ring on my FS bike and replaced it with a bash guard.
