Haven't heard that name in a while... but a good one!

Surf Punks: My Beach 2000

I'm still sorting through about 900MB of Japanese teenie bopper pop music. It gives me a headache, but it feels good when I turn it off.

Dead Milkmen: Death Rides a White Cow.
Pete

Damn Pete, you have good taste in music! Although its "Death rides a pale Cow". And "Labor Day" is a great song. Random fact: My childhood doctor's sister is married to the lead singer for the Dead Milkmen.

Im pretty sure I remember you posting lyrics to a TMBG song also. They are another of my favorite bands.

I am currently listening to the new Reel Big fish album, "We're not happy til you're not happy".

Drastic change of pace...

Now I have iTunes randomly selecting from My Steve Vai collection - Black Forest is gracing my speakers right now :)

How abouut we come up with the 10 best pre and post ride songs...

It'll be the MORE double album. Listen to it on the way to and on the way back from one of your epic rides... "Music selected by MORE's web geeks"

"The Black Forest" would be my first selection for the pre-ride side...

Tonight I'm gonna put on a little Tomasz Stanko to accompany this storm - probably the Green Hill LP. His jazz quartet is my absolute favorite.

My ipod has the whole Bob Marley discography. I just put the sucker on random and, you know, take it easy.

Now that's one of the best quotes I've read from our quotable Pete. The mark of truly good music.

home: Joni Mitchell doing a Charles Mingus tribute; Michael Wolff and Impure Thoughts

Ok, as long as we're bragging about knowing famous musicians.... I knew the original bass player in the Squirrel Nut Zippers -- and that was long before I took an interest in squirrels. He was a part time technician in the geology department at UNC when I was in grad school there. I'm only telling you all this so I can say GO HEELS!!!!

I spent a weekend playing paintball with the bass player for foghatt.I went to the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic last night. One of the bass players is my boss. There's not too much postable about that other than it continues the thread of knowing bass players EXCEPT for the caveat my boss told me at intermission. The Russian guy who did the rather lengthy and impressive piano solo had, during a previous performance with the WMP, had a heart attack DURING the performance. After being rushed to the hospital, given a pacemaker, and some recovery time, the pianist wanted to do the performance right, and that is what I attended last night.

My CD player in the car currently contains a compilation disc of modern Irish rock. Stuff like U2, Cranberries, Pogues, Hothouse Flowers, and whatnot are on there, along with loads of other bands that few people have heard of, like the Fatima Mansions, A-House, An Emotional Fish, Sultans of Ping FC, and loads more. (If anyone would like to be enlightened, lemme know and I'll burn you a copy!) That said, all I listen to in the car anymore is XM.

On the iPod, it changes everyday. At work, I always llisten to internet radio, KEXP out of Seattle.

I know two bass players. One's in a local band, called Down to This. The other is back in Ireland. Last time I saw him he was chasing me down the road, as I'd just gotten caught with his sister. Oops!

My brother is good buddies w/ one of those Q and Not U kids. I'm good buddies w/ a guy that plays (-ed) with the Skunks and Eastern Standard Time. My cousin's cousin played for Ozzy. I sometimes ride with the world famous guitarist Joe Pergano (sp?). That's all I got. ;)

My music isn't variegated; I listen to the same CDs over and over. Once I hook into something, I hardly change the CD for months or even years. I've had a Cure/New Order/Smiths era, a Pearl Jam/Nirvana era, TMBG/Sunny Day Real Estate era, and for the last eight or nine years I've been stuck in a Braid/Fugazi/Modest Mouse era. I'm looking for some new CDs to put into my car changer and not swap for the next five years...

interesting how many of us share musical tastes. i was surprised (although i probably shouldn't have been) to see Q and Not U mentioned. i love those guys, I've had their new cd constantly going since i picked it up at their last show.

also love the plan and promise ring which now = maritime. sweet.
did someone say Braid too?

right now aside from QandNotU, i've been listening to a lot of Tortoise, Medications, Faraquet and Les Savy Fav. All music I get easily hyped to.

maybe a new site feature should incorporate peoples playlists?

Let's see, claim to band fame...I got to push Gwen Stefani's butt up a hill when I used to work at Nissan Pavillion. Ah, memories...

I've also hung out with a few other various bands. Party with Dave Mathews Band on their bus, before um, taking a nap on the bus - also included The Roots who had opened for them. Played basketball with Pantera, actually played ball with quite a few bands being we had a net up at Nissan. On and on, those are the most memorable.

Oh yea, Chuck D once let me in the back door to the Flood Zone when Public Enemy came to Richmond and I was too young to attend. I had to sell my ticket because they wouldn't let me in, so I headed over to the hotel he was staying at and caught him in the lobby, told him my story, and the rest is history. Public enemy number one...

Hmm, whats in the CD changer right now -

I like to play Buck Cherry's " I'm going riding" for a pre ride song. Thru my wife I am friends with a couple guys locally who still play. One has been touring with Train and the other plays with Getaway Car and Pat Mcgee. Interesting thing is, when they played together their music was harder and they opened for Stone Temple Pilots. Since they grew up here and went to Robinson, probably several guys know them too. Tony Lopacinski and Chris Reardon. Tony is releasing a solo cd and playing with a new up and coming female country singer too.

I saw Buckcherry many years ago, always have liked them. I've seen Train a bunch of times, maybe to many to admit... so i've seen your friend play. I guess one of the guys here in my offices brothers sisters best friends boyfriends brothers sister knows him, or something like that.

I once hung out with Dido in her dressing room for a while (i wish i could say there was more to the story) but there isn't. We used to hang out with Lit after thier shows around here, not sure anyone really remembers what went on though!

Not that it was in doubt, but ya'll are clearly much cooler than I am--I don't think I recognized more than a few of the bands you listen to. You also must be seriously rich. I can't really afford to ride, let alone ride and buy music (or a player). Don't any of you have kids?! :p

I may not be cool, but I'm ecclectic. Here's what I'd love to hear...
Driving into FH, planning to hit it: Nine Inch Nails "Closer to God"
Trying to relax before a mellower ride: Murray Head "One Night in Bangkok"
Looping in my head during a ride: Van Halen Diver Down (esp. "Little Guitars")

When my kids control what's on, gimme Tom Paxton's "Going to the Zoo" (esp. "My Dog's Bigger than Your Dog"). Hey, it beats the Christian rock they've been finding on the boom box or letting them hear Katy Perry sing about blackouts and threesomes.

Oh, and put me down as another for NPR (pre/post ride only). But no car-talk. How can anyone stand those guys?! :D

dustyvelo

If I'm carpooling with friends we just tend to talk up the ride, but on my own? That's a different story. My very cool 18 year old daughter made me a CD for Christmas this past December. She had fond memoreis of my playing all sorts of 80's rock as we got fired up on the way to many a club volleyball tournament over the previous 7 years. It became synonymous with our time together. It's filled with a balanced share of AC/DC, Aerosmith, Van Halen - and a tad bit o' Queen, CCR and Creed. Great memories plus some great tunes = fired up.

Like JHarris, perhaps not to cool by today's standards, but I like it.
