Interesting story, just fodder for thought. I guess we'll all pay the piper somehow, sooner or later! :bangshead:

If 54 bucks every two years would get bike lanes in this area comparable to the ones in Portland I'd sign up in a second. I spent a summer there in the early 90's and the bike lanes were incredible.

I don't mind the $54 for 2 years, thats a negligible amount for me, but I imagine there are alot of other people where that money may be useful elsewhere, like food.

I have no problem paying this fee/tax as long as we got more/better infrastructure. I'd prefer that model to having a tax on everyone.

Aw, c'mon, you act like we're in a recession or something.... ;)

I suppose it's a good idea in some ways in theory, but I'm wondering if it's something that would actually be enforceable in our area (ok, something which would be evenly enforced) and I wonder if the revenue captured would be remotely enough to really install a bike lane system to parallel Portland's. Though, maybe so if it's $54 per bike... heheheheh

You get the idea. What kind of stupid, jerk came up with that? Some fat slob that drives an SUV?

If I lived in Portland I would ALREADY be paying for the road with my AUTO and GAS taxes. Why should I even consider paying again for deciding to RIDE a bike instead of act like a BOZO and rushing about in my polluting POC so I can get home in time to watch American Idiot while munching my McDonalds. :hammertime:

Okay, Craig... your turn.

Maybe it's an excuse to pull over any "illegal alien" looking folks on a bike and demand their license and registration. Right now there is that inconvenient probably cause thing to deal with, but hey, if their bike didn't have a sticker, well, there you go!

The sticker thing is in effect here in DC, just not enforced on the regular. Back in the '90s the cops would sweep dupont almost daily and confiscate bikes until proof of purchase could be obtained. I think this was more to run the messengers out of the circle than anything else. It worked. We all just went 4 blocks south and hung out at Farragut.

No, no - in addition to paying for the road, there's now talk of us having to pay for additional white lines which will constitute "bike lanes", or as they're called around here "Dang, couldn't find a parking space / loading area so I'll just park my car/truck/FedEx vehicle here" lanes.

Ahhh, those were the days. I remember them well! You're right - the only point was to run us messengers off - I guess they didn't want to make the tourists feel uneasy. Maybe all those men in tights made the Dupont crowd uneasy? :p

Granted, a few of those guys (messengers) weren't the most professional...

So, if I just ride on the sidewalk...

Geez.

Maybe they will ticket little kids with training wheels.

I think they've banned riding on the sidewalks in some areas of DC, too

"So what I'm gonna do is p*ss and moan like an impotent jerk, and then I'm gonna bend over and take it up the tailpipe!"

Hey, today I saw a guy on a Huffy with a helmet over his ballcap!

Alas, I couldn't ride, and spent 3 hours in the car getting downtown and back. And now back to the office to work more. :(
