It appears that the general opinion here is that one needs to spend at least $1500 to get themselves a new, decent FS bike. What if one already has some good parts to move onto the bike? Are there any sub-$1000 FS bikes that are based on a decent frame, but just have low-end components? Case in point, I already have a fork, pedals and possibly a rear shock to go onto a bike that has some good bones.

Examples would be the Mongoose Otero, Giant Yukon FX, or Jamis Dakar XC.

rscycle.com has some good deals on the Azure and MKIII. You can get either one for about $1,000 with respectable specs.

If you already have most of the components, I'd look around for a good used frame (or cheap closeout).

Here is a deal I saw that appears to be pretty good.
It looks like BMC uses the DW link as well.

Chainlove has been putting a bunch of frames up lately. You could get into a Titus or several different Intense frames. I would check their site frequently though because the deals can go quick.

On an aside, i am seeing some frames that are single-pivot, how detrimental is it? If I splurge for a remote lockout rear, would that mitigate most of the issues?

There are some crappy single pivots out there and there are some excellent ones. I wouldn't pass on bike just because its a single pivot (nor would I buy a bike because it has a more "advanced" design).

Go to the westminster swap meet and buy a used bike or frame - for 500 bucks you will get a lot for your money for 1000 you may be able to walk into a 1800 bike new from one of the dearlers there.

I havent done much research on Bmc, how the reputation with that manaufacture on quality- considering getting that one myself for a build from a heavy all mountain bike thats killing me with the weight on uphills.
Would you say that model frame is rather lightweight and rugged ( the black one shown from the link on jenson /)
thanks for the link and advice

I got an 05 Jamis dakar, from Jenson.
Had all the components from 2 earlier bikes, and built it up with all that.

Got just want I wanted for well under 1,000.
Took a little time, but it was fun to do
