I am converting my road bike to a SS. I have a Shimano Ultegra with a 130 bolt pattern. I have to run the chainring on the outside of the crank arms for the best chain line. I want to run a 42t or 44t chainring. Everything I have found says those size rings are for the inside of the crank. Can I just flip the ring over and use on the outside? Since it will be non-ramped, will it cause any problems? Anyone ever done this?

You should be perfectly fine.

I can't quite picture this. Please post up a picture if it works out.

No pictures needed. One difference between an inner ring (middle and small) and an outer ring (large) is where the chainbolt recesses are. Meaning on the inner ring the recesses is on the inside of the crank (closest side to the frame). The outer ring recesses are on the outside of the crank (non frame side). So I am wondering if I just flip an inner chainring 180 deg so the recesses are on the ouside now, if there would be a problem.

The only thing I can think of, other than what you said is outter rings have that little pin behind the crank arm that keeps the chain from jamming between the ring and arm, should it come off on the outside. Not a huge deal, just something to be aware of - if your chain comes off on that side, stop pedaling (speaking from experence).

i've had this issue with 4-bolt, but nothing a file wouldn't fix. Also doesn't seem to be universal, as my middleburn cranks are the same for the inner and outer position.

You'll be fine. I run all of my rings on the outside. MTB and road, all 5 arm setups.
