Ack- you have to subscribe for $20.00/year to get access to doppler radar at weather.com...does anybody know of any free websites for the local area where you can see da doppler (most accurate way to predict riding conditions)?

I may end up paying- but just hoping for a free resource...

I'll have to play with them- I liked how you could zoom in right over the DC Metro Area and see where the precip was forming...

Thanks again!

Weatherbug is free, though it's sometimes viewed as spyware/adware. It's got some doppler info.

I just checked weather.com and I can see the doppler radar, including the looping feature. However, I never normally look at doppler radar by them. I used to like Intellicast, and do have bookmarks to all their different scales of radar. But, I seem to think AccuWeather.com has the easiest to view radar graphics. They charge only for their premium service which gives longer loop durations and more frequent updates. But you can get really fine graphics for absolutely no money at all.

I've got no problem getting doppler for free on Weather.com, although I hate how they switched things around lately.

Try this link (http://www.weather.com/weather/map/21227?from=LAPmaps&name=index_large_animated&day=1)

Hmmm, yes there is free doppler on Weather.com...but either I've lost my way, but what I can't seem to get anymore is the resolution where I can see the intersection of 495/395 and approximate where Wake-Tink is and ascertain if the predicted precipitation is passing by or impacting the area of interests?

I'm going to succumb to the paid trial and provide comments, etc...

Right below the doppler map is a drop down box. Select 100 mile doppler and you should get the view you need (provided you are looking at the right town - my link I posted is for Avalon)

You da man! Me dear old mammy used to say look with your eyes not with your mouth...that's the resolution I was looking for- problem solved!

Granted, this view is accessible through the 36-hour view- I have my 'favorites' set to the 10-day view...

User Error...

There you go- Thanks!

3/23/05 >> I sometimes use "Intellicast" also, however I'm not sure there are any sites that actually give you "real-time"doppler radar ( at least for free ). Last year when a storm was approaching my area I was viewing the Intellicast radar as the storm hit my neighborhood. The radar showed the storm about five miles away but it was raining buckets outside where I live. A half an hour later when the storm was clearing, the Intellicast radar showed the storm in my area. It was accurate but it was not in real time. I also use Weatherbug for local weather updates...not a bad site but not as detailed graphics for the radars. Weatherbug lets you display "real-time" weather readings from the weather station nearest you. For me, thats a high school less than a mile away...nice feature. If any one knows of a site that deliveres "real-time"doppler for free please sound off".

3/23/05 >> Thanks X.... I'll have to take a closer look at what the NOAA site has to offer. Now if I can just get it to display a more local map with a little more resolution and also show some movement (direction of the storms)...Thanks again. :)

Well the entire objective of this thread was to determine if MTB was a feasible option for this weekend at WakeTink?

The desired accuracy isn't that precise per my requirements- In the past, pre-Baby Opns, I had a bit of success judging where the storms were relative to where I wanted to ride- the Doppler was the only way to really see how much the weather report applied for my locale. Granted, the added-value data was really just knowing the bad weather was north / south of my target location or it was 8-12 hours out...sometimes, you can have a look in the a.m. and figure you have a 'window' of opportunity +/- a few hours and what not...

Anyway, it is good to know there are so many free resources, I'm going to start playing with them all...granted, I'd like to also say- weather reporting is pretty amazing these days and not, I'm not a totally ungrateful weenie...

This is supposed to be

NOAA real time doppler (http://weather.noaa.gov/radar/latest/DS.p19r0/si.klwx.shtml)

I use a program for Mac OS X and OS 9 called WeathermanX, it's a shareware program for $10 that works great. It can download data from any NOAA weatherstation via zipcode or city and state and will pull in the same real time doppler into it, along with a few other options. Better yet, it will magnify to 500% any of the images and loop the previous 10 images. It also gives local forcasts, current conditions and any type of weather bulletin. And you can set up multiple cities, I've got one for Gambrill, Avalon, Home (Silver Spring) and dock icons display current conditions. Pretty handy little app and the best $10 I ever spent on software. If you've got a Mac check it out.
