View Full Version : Time for a new wheel.

I've about destroyed my wheel. Well, there is no "about" about it.
I want to build up a new one and need suggestions on rims and a hub.
The last wheel was built up using a Hope XC. That was the biggest POS in the world.
The internal axle(?) has broken twice and it started not "freespinning" right.
I've got OEM bontrager hubs off of cheap Treks that have outlasted the Hope.
Its for a rear wheel, 36 hole, 29er.
No, I don't think I wanna go tubeless.
Sure its all fine and dandy till you do get a flat.
It needs to be tough, no light weight stuff, and easily maintained.
And money is a big factor.
Any ideas, suggestions.
I haven't started any other searching yet.
Thanks

If you haven't, make sure you contact Hope about that hub. They supposedly have pretty good customer service. If you can get the hub fixed you can at least sell it to help defray the costs of the new wheel.

I've destroyed several rear wheels, including a poorly built one that lasted only one ride and ended with a eyelet torn through the rim (a mavic single walled, 617 maybe?). I finally spent the money on a good wheel build, and that wheel lasts to this day.
I'm pretty frugal. So, my strategy is to buy used wheels with Chris Kings or just a hub, knowing that I can rebuild them later, and they'll pretty much last forever with a minimal amount of care and feeding.
Or you can get a pre-built wheel from colorado cyclist for about what it would cost you to buy the parts new: http://www.coloradocyclist.com/product/kit/KINCMXLH

Mavic TN719 rims, for certain - the xm719 it's based off of is by far one of the best MTB rims around, they're not cheap - expect to spend 160ish on the rims (pair) but they're solid from the factory and even a DIY decent build will get great life out of them. Only thing I don't remember offhand (and can't find online) if they come in a 36H drilling.
On the cheap - try something WTB, maybe some laserdisc AM (i think those come in 29"), they're not quite as indestructible but I've heard good things.
Both of those might be invalid, since I was thinking 32H, but hopefully the 719s come in 36H.
just my .02 as a mavic lover :confused2:

And he's probably one of the best at matching people and their riding style to a wheel or wheels that will work for them.

So you finally had to give up on that wobally old wheel huh? If you rode a 26r I could hook you up with my spare until you saved up for a good one...But you are just one step away from being a complete zelot aren't you?
BTW, I have nothing constructive to add to this conversation except that I have had excellent success with the Bontrager Race rims that came on both of my Treks.
http://bontrager.com/products/components/wheels/en (http://bontrager.com/products/components/wheels/en) Race lite Tubeless ready for $235 - $480 a set. You only need one so it should be cheaper.
(I would go tubeless ready in case you change your mind someday. Tubeless is great. The sidewalls seem to last longer than standard tires. And just carry a tube in case you get a flat....oh wait....you already do that. :bangshead:

These wheels are typically OEM. If you go that route, I would take them into a shop for a truing and a once over before installing.

I've got a bunch of the Bonty wheels in stock that I would sell to MORE members at 30% off.

I think this is the same guy from lacemine29. Some decent looking deals here and it may be worthwhile to keep an eye on this in general.

Tommy. If it makes you feel any better about tubeless. All the WolfGap rides we did I was running tubeless with Stan's juice.
As far as hubs I love my DT 240s, and heard good things about the Flow rims.
