heads up - someone threw a rock through my car window at the Seminary Ave church lot at noon today. They stole a duffle bag & my jeans w/the wallet in the pocket. They rang up a few cc charges on my card before I was even back at the lot. Wachovia caught it really quickly & cxl'd the card. still sucks, so hide your stuff.

It really gives you that holiday feeling! Had someone get into my truck a few years ago, best to keep your wallet and stuff locked in the glove compartment.

That blows. It's happened to me too. I carry my wallet, any anything else really valuable, in my pack.

Well, I drive a Chevy tracker with a soft top so there really is no locking it. Except for the glove compartment. So I leave nothing out that I would not mind getting stolen, which is everything. A thief is the lowest form of life, especially a bike thief. Lost a good cannondale that way...

That's a bummer and a pain :nope:. A couple of years ago I had my wallet stolen from a gym, the only time it has been stolen. They only got $10, but what was really irritating was the time it took to cancel credit cards/get them reissued, replacing id cards, etc, etc. Since that happened I decided to become extra cautious with stuff in my car too. I always keep either an old t-shirt or a towel in the car now. I drape it over big items, such as bike gear or a laptop, that I need to leave if I have to go into a store. Given that thieves are opportunistic creatures, this removes the opportunity from their sight. So far, it has worked!

I had my car broken in to at the Park and Ride by Avalon about 15 years ago. The crooks stole the radio out of my car, but left a wallet with about $100 in cash in it. 5 days later I was in FLA about to buy a round of drinks when I couldn't find my credit card. Bingo. The crooks stole the card when they took the radio. They left the cash in the wallet to throw off the credit card theft. They got about $8000 worth of stuff in 2 days before the bank turned it off. Pretty slick bastards. The bank covered everything, just a pain in the A**.

Yeah, I typically stash my wallet deep in the recesses of my car where it would take a long, long time to find, but not this time. I think the duffle bag; although almost empty, was the attraction. About 10 years ago in Balt Pen Station lot I left a duffle bag on my back seat. Same thing happened. No wallet in the bag that time, just some dirty road bike clothes & shoes. I should have learned.
I spent yesterday canceling cards & will get an ID & window replaced tomorrow.

That sucks Rmac. Some one else warned me about this during the Summer. Its a shame cause its a popular place to park for night riding too. You would think this type of thing shouldn't happen being that it is a Church parking lot....

That sucks! Sorry to hear that rmac. I heard about that happening to a few people over the summer in the same place.
Not that this helps but, I never leave anything in my car, especially not in sight. I leave my wallet at home and carry my license, some cash and a cc in my camelback.
Hard to believe in the middle of the day in a church pking lot.

so today around 3:00 I decide to walk the dog down at Merrymans. I pull into the small dirt lot on Dulaney Valley just before the bridge. As I get out of my car I look at the car parked to my right & sure enough, the passenger side window is freshly busted in with glass on the ground & hanging in the window frame. I waited around a bit for the owner but did not see him or her. This time there were plenty of cars parked in that little lot, only one had the window busted.

so the break ins may be becoming a regular thing, have been happening more than I knew of, or I'm just bad luck.

I can't believe that someone has the balls to break into cars right there!? It's not like the lot is exactly hidden from the intersection. I would think with all the traffic moving up and down Dulaney Valley Road, someone would see something. Maybe I am remembering the intersection differently.

It's probably not so much the holiday feeling, but one of the results of a crap economy, the recession, and a record rate of unemployment. I would expect more and more reports of similar incidents, mainly petty theft, car break-ins, etc. I might even anticipate an increase in the number of people being assaulted in mall and grocery store parking lots - that bag of groceries is going to become an increasingly attractive target as the strain on area food banks continues. Heck, I was reading the other day that in Japan (?) there are an increasing number of elderly people being stopped for shoplifting - most of the thefts are apparently food related, and more often than not the perps are escorted out of the markets without arrest. Desperate times, desperate measures. I don't even leave loose pennies out in plain view in my cupholders anymore. :nope:
