I did give a cup of coffee to one of my long jumpers at the Indoor NCAA Track and Field championships back in the day because he "didn't feel it" after his first 3 jumps. At the break, coaches were stressing big time, he was pretty much flat. The coaches basically told me to do what I can. I ran to the nearest coffee machine (I did do some active release stuff too). He ended up winning the long jump that night, his only championship in college. He did take 4th in Athens and 6th in China in the 110 hurdles for Jamaica.
Was it the caffeine? Or was it psychological, considering that it takes 7-8 cups to test positive for caffeine by the NCAA and that it wasn't a regular size cup?

I'm just shocked they test for caffeine. Is there anything for which they don't test?

I use Gatorade because it's cheap and easy to get, plus it has a lot of sodium, which helps in the summer. I also like Heed. At the long races I'll usually run whatever they have so I don't have to carry a bunch of extra stuff. I don't like Cytomax, it has a weird taste that grosses me out after a while. I don't like the carbonation in Red Bull or Coke. For caffiene I like Hammer Espresso Love gel, I save that for late in a long event, it's as close as I have come to having a cup of coffee when the going gets tough.

I would say that it could be a little bit of both. It took 3 Red Bulls, chugged in less than a minute, for me to even feel the effects of the caffeine. Everyone metabolizes it at different rates.

I hear you. I have 2 cups of coffee in the morning and a cup or two by late morning early afternoon. The first two cups of coffee are the key to setting up my day right. Luckily at work, there is always a coffee mess around!
If I was into energy drinks, our little convenient store(MCX) has probably every energy drink known to man. All the gigantic sizes.
