If I were a few inches (alright, stop laughing... more than a few!) taller, or if this was a medium I'd be all over this. BUY THIS BIKE!!

hmm, what do you think the minimum height is for that frame?

As short as 5'9" is legal....granted, I wouldn't advise this purchase is you are this tall, built up the bike will be tall and for solid technical riding, I'd always aim smaller then larger...but that is me...

If I recall correctly, I rode a Large Heckler and it was fine for me at 5'11". However, when I was shopping for my WBB, I tried a Large Blur and thought it was a little big. I suspect if you're somewhere in that range, a short stem might solve the problem. IMHO, I would not consider a Large if I were 5'9".

If you are planning to run a 130-mm travel fork, this will definitely be too big!

Granted, with the longer travel fork, this bike descends like a pro- very stable at speeds.

I'd recommend a 100-mm travel fork for all around Trail riding competencies...if folks want the 5th element shock, add $100.00 to the price...but I plan on keeping it at this price point (great technology)...

The only reason I'm selling this is I have two ORANGE full sussers- almost exactly alike, performance wise, but one has a 1-degree steeper seatube and for my biomechanic details- this compliments me and my riding style better...o/w if I was to rank this bike against all others I have owned, this would be in the top three by far ahead of (Intense Tracer, Sls (99 and 00 version- and the 99 was a classic!), SLX, Ellsworth Id, RM 6, Super Vs, etc.) w/ the 5th element shock, this is an incredible handling trail bike for the east coast...if you are an XC weenie, look elsewhere...if you like a fast descending rig, with good low speed manners, that can easily handle some abuse if the whim hits you- this is the premier ride for you...you can build it up as a free ride biased rig, or a wicked solid XCish handling bike...you choice...the bike I'm keeping rides 90% like the Heckler w/ one minor variance...I'd build this up as a FR rig, if I was young and stupid- but I'm getting old and more reserved and the days of yore ain't today anymore...so ideally someone will take advantage of this insane deal so I don't have to build it back up and sell it as a complete bike on craigslist or ebay...

sigh,

what year was this bike built, out of curiosity? Has the design undergone any major revisions since?

Snot-Rocket
March 30th, 2005, 01:32 PM
No major revisions, none projected- a very solid design with a huge following...only someone who knows me and my bike fickleness can appreciate what a surreal opportunity I'm presenting here! Bikes and components used to be like crack to me...ha, ha!

Yeah, I know I'm too short for a large, but I've been wanting to get a heckler for a while. I guess it's a good thing though, since I don't even have room for a frame at the moment...

I am going to have to pass on this super-sweet deal, but fyi, anyone that's interested, on mtbr.com well used heckler frames are going for much more money. I even considered buying this frame and reselling it for more $, capitalist scum that I am.

The goal was to unload this quickly to make space...granted, I've decided to just build this up for one of my best friends in the Army and give it to him at a ridiculously low price...

Damn! I'm not sure how I missed this thread! Sure you don't want to sell it? Just so happens I have $481 burning a hole in my pocket.

You see- my dilemma is as such...

I have a 2003 Z1 Bomber fork, cranks, wheel set, disc brakes, seat post, seat, transmission and all kinds of parts laying around- that as long as they lay around...I hear in the back of my mind 'if you build it, you'll have another bike...' There is no thoughts of needing another bike, wanting another bike- just the horrible thoughts of not letting all these random parts sit around not on a bike- Like what kinda person would I be to not let this random components not self-actualize as an integral component to some bike!!!

I've been thinking, maybe a 29'r...maybe a SC Chameleon for my pull my kid bike or MAYBE I need a jump bike so I can practice in my driveway and, and, and...bo I gotta get rid of most of these parts already and an easy solution is to just build this frame up and sell it on ebay or elsewhere...ha, ha!

Anyway, free me from my dilemma and maybe we'll work something out...

Hmm, I'd of course be looking to build this frame up as well but it just so happens I have no extra parts laying around. My other problem is since I just bought a new Kona hardtail I don't have much of the green stuff laying around either. ;-) My first thought was to buy this bike and build it up slowly over the summer gathering cash as I go but being the humanitarian that I am I'd like to see if I can help you with your dilema. I might not want to take all the parts off your hands but there is a good chance I'd take most of them. It all depends how much you want and how much I can manage to scounge up. You can contact me via email to see if we can work something out. If we can make it worthwhile for both of us I could most likely have the cash in your hand by this weekend.

Mike... buy the Heckler, strip the parts off the Kona, and pop 'em on the SC. You'll never look back!

COME to the dark side of FS!!! ;)

Trying to work out the details via email ............hopefully we can work something out that will benefit us both. Will keep you posted.

Well, Mike just rolled out of mi casa w/ his new SC Heckler frame...

I offered to help swap out some parts- cause I have the tools and what not... For me it was like giving up one of my children- sigh! ...as Mike mounted the bike on his car rack, I looked on longingly- hoping Mike will appreciate the money 5th Element suspension, the great geometry and design, the versatile platform and just what a great package it is!

Granted, this was a strategic sell...creating room in the 'Bike Cave' for future opportunities (er, post the laundry list of home projects and what not- ha, ha!)

It's mine.....all mine! ;-)

I'm very excited about getting this bike out on the trails, it's sad but I actually had a dream about riding it last night. A big thanks goes out Tom for helping me swap most of the parts over. After I left Tom's my buddy Kevin and I finished the build (Thanks to you as well Kev). I still need to make some minor adjustments to the setup but besides that all that's left is to dial-in the 5th Element Coil which I hear can be a confusing/time consuming task.

Mike - did you strip down that Kona of yours already? ;)

Congrats on that purchase mate - the Heckler was VERY high on my list of choices when I bought, but I wanted something a little more XC oriented. Chances are it'll be my next purchase though. You got a killer deal there for under $500.

SR, next time you buy a frame like that, I suggest you get a smaller one. That way, when you decide to flog it, I'll be able to scoop it up... :-D

Yeah we moved all the parts over yesterday. Had to get some new cabels and a chain. We were going to try and use my XTR Front D but it was a bottom swing and the Heckler requires a top swing.

If stuff is dry enough we were going to try and make a run on Tuesday.

I did offer an XTR FD when I was swapping parts...

I need to do an inventory of FDs- but this one will likely be up for grabs at a reasonable price... Mike make me an offer, I think the one I have is as used as the Heckler Frame itself...

Don't want to speak for Mike but we did run out and get an XT that day.

Yup, the Kona was totally stripped. Hopefully I'll get my first ride in this evening so I'll let you guys know how it goes.

After we figured out the FD Kevin had wasn't going to fit I kicked myself for not taking you up on your offer. We ended up hitting the bike store so I already picked up the correct XT FD I needed.

24 days to be exact, one of those weeks I was sick as a dog and another I spent dealing with the death of my grandmother. I only got it on the trails 2 times.

One of the two times I had it out was at Greenbriar, where my bud Kev(curse you!) was nice enough to let me ride his Ellsworth FS. At that moment I started having second thoughts on my decision to add another hardtail to my stable. So now the plan is to ride the heck out of my heckler(no pun inteded) and breathe some life back into my old hardtail with some new components.

I've had it out on 2 good rides and I'm very happy with it. Climbs much better than I expected and the added weight over my Kona isn't as noticable as I though it would be. I am however having some trouble getting the 5th Element Coil setup to my liking...just going to take some time I guess.

Mike,

Post following SC set up guide, I literally made a spread sheet on each 5 x setup options and tweaked from there and what not....I carried it on rides and made modifications and what not, keeping track of what I was doing...

Ha, ha...granted, that is the most challeinging details...

Rah,

Tom
