I have seen these on trial bikes but I was thinking about using them on my
non-disk x-country bike. My concern is with modulation – something trial riders don’t worry about.
Any insights?

i picked up a set a few years ago from ebay. promptly crashed soon afterwards and killed a reservoir on one of the levers.

they were ok, but i'd pass. i didn't think they were that much better for the hassle it took to adjust the housing, finding the correct bits, etc..

get a decent set of v's. If your brakes feel soft, it's probably more of a flexy chainstay issue than the power of the brakes problem. (a problem my cannondale caad2 frame had).

I used them on my tandem for years. Once you get them set up, they're extremely powerful and give very good modulation. They're much more consistant feeling than lateral pull (V) brakes.

They take a bit more force to pull the lever than a good set of v-brakes though. The do not have the light feel that you can get with a slick set of cables hooked up to a good set of Vs.

I had ZERO problems with durability, adjustment or getting parts. They're VERY simple to work on. They've got probably the easiest brake pad change system on the market.

They're heavy.

I love them. Get some nice V-brakes and enjoy the heck out of them. :D

what Pete said!

Pre "V" brake they were the bomb brake for us heavier fellas but while I love them I have gotten rid of mine for older frame bikes and just use good v brakes and on my tandem I have a brake arch to make them a little stronger.

Thank you all for helping me resist my winter male hormonal urge to waste money on needless upgrades.
