View Full Version : Who Would You Tongue-Kiss?

If you look back at the last 10 - 15 years of mountain biking, there's been dozens of innovations that have made MTB riding better, safer and a lot more fun. If you could choose one innovation to MTBing that you are so enamored with that you would tongue kiss the person that came up with the idea, which one would it be?
I would absolutely tongue-kiss the person that thought up hydraulic brakes for MTBs. I had tried them on a friend's bike, but until I actually did a full ride with them on my newly purchased Trek 6500, I had no idea just how awesome hydros are. I am just blown away at how much better they are than any other brake system. In addition to the hydros on the 6500, I purchased a used set of Avid Juicys from a fellow MORE member to put on my squishy, I can't wait to do the install now!

I'd go with the guy(s) that put knobby tires on beefy frames to begin with.

Um...I haven't been biking long enough to know what's "new." I guess if I had to tongue someone it would have to be Darcy Turenne (http://www.hellodarcy.com/home_files/droppedImage.png). Sure, she wouldn't be what one would consider "innovative" but she can ride the hell out of a bike and I'm sure she's much more pleasant to tongue than the old geezers who developed mountain biking.

I like bikes but not enough to kiss a dude. So I will say Sky Yeager for designing my frames.

Yeah, well wasn't this an opinion based thread? I mean, who here would actually go out and kiss strangers? I was just expressing my opinion that she would seem pleasant to smooch, being that she's a very cute girl, and a pretty gnarly freerider/dirt jumper.
Here let me clarify: I would totally tongue Darcy.;):flushed::eek ::cool::p;);)

without a doubt - Robert Reisinger - fisher and his crew may take credit for mt biking but it was robert and the mountain cycle san andreas that created what it is today - hardcore, cross country and down hill worthy dual suspension and diskbrakes. Too bad the company crumbled when he sold it.

Well, that's a given, but the rules of the game were innovations to MTB that occurred in the last 10 or 15 years.
Also, I would agree that the person who thought up the 9 speed drivetrains for MTB should get kicked in the nuts.

I don't think anyone is bashing on gears, it's just 9 speed drive-trains that people don't like. 8 speeds were more than enough, were stronger, worked better in less than ideal conditions and required less maintenance.
It's like putting ten speed drive-trains on cross bikes. I mean seriously, why do we need that many gears on a bike that (by the very nature of the sport) is going to be run in nasty conditions? :confused2:

Amazing! When first seeing this thread's title, and before reading any of the replies, I took a guess at some of the possible comments and/or subjects that might be offered up by posters. It must be my lack of imagination, because neither Tatum O'neal nor Kristy McNichol came to mind as possible subjects, yet there they are, even a picture is thrown in for good measure :confused2:. Very entertaining though so don't get me wrong :).

I am new enough, (or old enough) that I don't remember how my cheap 8 speed stuff worked compared to the much nicer 9 speed stuff I now sport.
So to clarify my personal confusion, which end did they add the 9th gear to? :confused2:

So to clarify my personal confusion, which end did they add the 9th gear to? :confused2:I think the overall width of the cassette remained the same, and so did the top and bottom gear ratios. 9-speed just gives you one more gear between them and makes the jumps between them closer.
Kinda pointless. I'm generally jumping 2-3 gears at a time anyway. I probably wouldn't notice if you took one away.

I wish I could get a 30 tooth middle chainring. Then I could actually use all the rear cassette instead of being stuck between 14 and 34 most of the time.

Howerver, the big (easy) cog started growing bigger at the same time. I was an 8 speed hold out until 2000 or so when I ditched all but one gear. At the time I was running an 11 - 28 spread. Between the disappearing higher end 8 speed stuff and the move to increase the size of the cogs, those things became impossible to locate.

I've run 10speed on my cross bike for over 3 years now, and have never had an issue. Broken one chain in that time, and it was due more to a hard crash right before than anything else.
Shifts great, even in crappy conditions. Compared to my old nine speed cross bike, I like the drivetrain a lot more.

Farrah knows how to ride a skateboard, too. Plus, I had one of Charlie's Angels.
Back on topic-I'll vote for the Camelback. Given that I'm a relative newcomer to mtb'ing, I'm not exactly sure how long they've been around. But, who cares, that's my vote.

I gotta say M97x (newest XTR) works waaaay better than the last generation of 8spd XTR which I still have on my DH bike. In fact, next season I'll be pulling off the 8spd pods and retiring my stack of 11-30 XT cassettes in favor of an XTR trigger and Saint shadow derailleur.
