I stripped out my stock freewheel two nights ago on the Rosaryville night ride (I'll go ahead and blame the guys from St Mary's County for that one! ;)) and am hoping to get a replacement quickly so I cen get back out and ride. Anyone have anything laying around they wouldn't mind parting with?

A 17t would be ideal, though a 16t which I was riding or an 18t would be awesome as well.

Also, how difficult are these to swap out? I've worked with fixed gear cogs and full cassettes before but know next to nothing about single speed freewheel setups.

I believe I have one of these: http://www.bikeworldusa.us/Shimano-SFMX30-DX-Single-Freewheel-18T/M/B001C4HD0I.htm

It's been on my bike, but never saw any use due to the fixed cog on the other side of my flip flop hub. Is $10 fair? I live in Silver Spring, work in DC.

Let me know what works for you.

Freewheels can be a *itch to get off a hub and don't try it unless you have the proper tools. The first thing you need is the correct freewheel removal tool. It could be a two or four notch type.

Heck, just go here (http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=48) and let Park Tools explain it better than I ever could.

Excellent, thanks for the info wrench! Hopefully my lbs will let me borrow theirs cause I definitely don't have that.

Toros, that's sounds perfect to me. I'll PM you.

Thanks!

You may want to see if the shop can do it for you. For me getting a freewheel off entails a big wrench or mounted worktable vice. Also once you put the freewheel tool on the freewheel, use a skewer to hold it in place as you torque the wrench or vice. If the FW tool slips it could damage the splines, you'll be SOL if that happens.

Cheers,
-Jason

Listen to Jason and have the LBS remove it, especially if you'd have to borrow the tool from them. It'll only cost a couple bucks and they should be able to break it free in a matter of minutes. Not to mention, if you don't have a VERY SECURE benchtop vice and/or a long handled (24") wrench don't even bother, freewheels require a lot of torque to break them free.

I've got a 16/18t White Industries dual ENO freewheel that is currently not in use and I'd let go cheap. It's used, but they last forever. I've had one Shimano freewheel that came stock on my Bianchi. It lasted all of a month. I would not recommend them. ACS are ok, but WI is the shite!

Quickest & easiest way to remove a freewheel is with an impact wrench. Got one of those too.

Single-speed Freewheels
A single-speed (BMX) freewheel is a modular unit, consisting of a single sprocket and its associated freewheel (coasting) mechanism. These have standard 1.37" x 24 tpi threads, and fit on any hub that takes a thread-on freewheel. This includes BMX hubs, track hubs, and multi-speed freewheel hubs.

I recommend this tool to anyone that spends time with freewheels. It's a BMX wrench, but it works like a charm and is only $20 bucks:

And like eveyone said, get the White Industries ENO freewheel. It is worth every penny and it is waaay better than anything else. An although the price may seem steep, with some work you can get one cheaper than the $90 retail.

Bikeman up in Maine has a continuous string of ENO freewheels on eBay almost all the time as an auction (not a buy it now) and if you keep watching and bidding you can pick one up for cheap.

Speedgoat has a sale on them right now. 17t is only $61.64.

Thanks for all the input everyone! I'd been eyeing the White Industry hubs on pricepoint but just couldn't convince myself to pay that much right now. Especially when I'm at a point where every other thing is breaking on the bike these days... :bangshead:

Makes more sense to upgrade as I go along though...

I'll bring it to the shop and if nothing else see if they'll do it/let me do it or at least observe. Unfortunately I hate to say it but I'm losing a bit of faith in what has been my local shop through my recent ordeal.
