My current tire setup is a High Roller 2.1 front and a K-Rad 1.95 rear. This combo is fast, and I haven't flatted, but rear grip is not great. I spun out on leaves while climbing at Wakefield and in general feel that the back end is a bit squirrelly.

Here are the tires that are currently available to me:

Maxxis High Roller 2.1
Kenda K-Rad 1.95
Specialized Team Master 1.9
Kenda Nevegal 2.35

I would like to come up with a good combo from what I currently have. Most of my riding is at Michael Faraday and Schaeffer, with some Wakefield thrown in.

Thoughts?

I love the Nevegal on the front, not the fastest tire, but lots of traction. Maybe that with the Maxxis on the rear? I personally prefer the Maxis Cross Mark on the rear. Me likes the Cross Mark. :)

Funny, that was the setup I had prior to the current one. Liked it, but seemed slow. Wanted to see what others thought.

Funny wierd or funny ha ha! Sometimes you have to sacrifice speed for traction unless you are an exceptional rider.......

I prefer traction that lets me corner a little faster. I am more than heavy enough that some larger knobs don't slow me that much.

The upcomong summer will find me trying cross marks on both ends though. I do see that a lot. But to get two tubeless models will set you back $120!

Most Traction is the Nevegal/High Roller front and rear. If you're mostly interested in traction I'd just run those all winter, wear them out and buy new tires i the spring. That tire combo would hook up most places, but I'd guess it would roll slowly. Not much experience w/ the other tires.

Spinning out on leaves doesn't necessarily indicate you have a bad tire set up...especially if we are talking dry leaves or not decomposed wet / slippery leaves...and if squirrely is attributed to just fall conditions- maybe it is just the fall?

For a winter tire, I always liked a toothy corner bead and deep, meaty. well spaced tread patterns. You want a tread pattern that bites and also sheds mud well. I wouldn't worry about speed, but more on control - in the muck "traction" is king and any good winter tire is likely SLOW relatively....

I had crossmarks(tubed) on both ends for my hardtail in the summer. Once I found that sweet spot for inflation they were money in dry conditions and great in wet conditions also. Too much air I found them very squirrely. I thought they were somewhat quick also compared to my Kenda Small Block 8s.

I'm running the high rollers 2.1s on the hardtail front and rear. They look like 1.95s. They came stocked on another bike and was rarely used. I figured it wouldn't be a bad tire for the winter.

I'd run the Nevegal backwards on the rear for max traction. I'm more interested in traction versus rolling resistance, especially in winter conditions. One spin out while climbing & that hill is usually cooked for me / or I need a lot of traction to start back up. I run Nevegal DTC 29x2.2 front correct & rear reversed and traction has been stellar.
