Is it possible to easily convert a QR hub to a bolt-on set-up I can use with horizontal drop-outs on a SS? I am prepping for some snow riding this winter, and want to install some home-made studded tires on a spare wheelset I have lying around.

Yes and Yes. Well it depends on what hub you have. I know with Shimano you can get a solid axle and replace the QR axle with it. Take it into any good bike shop and they should be able to swap it for you. And Yes you can run a SS with Horizonal dropouts. But if you have Horizonal dropouts, just get a Surly Tugnut or any tensioner and use the QR. It will work fine.

If you have a shimano quick release it will hold you hub tight enough on horizontal dropouts without any other device.

Thanks! This is good news - my spare wheelset has XT hubs. Thanks for the tips.
