How many of you ride these trails in South Reston? Just curious.
This afternoon I cleared out a number of trees in there. (Don't worry, no chainsaws were used.) Much more ridable now, but there are still 3 or 4 that are too big for my handsaw. I'll give the area-6 bubbas a shout to let them know.

I've heard about the area, but haven't made it over there yet. Hopefully soon though, there just isn't enough time in the day/week. How does the terrain compare to the Colts Neck loop, similarities/differences?

trails are def. worth exploring in decent shape at least over the summer. Met a guy who lived around there who has put together several loops by spray painting trees. Really easy to get lost back there, lots of networked trails. Guy I met had made several decently sized gap jumps with dirt and logs. Has some very decent grades. Best to park by the soccer fields and go in there.

They are alot of fun, a little overgrown, and lots of poison ivy.

The terrain is very similar, trails are typical fall-line/creek-side/ridge-top stuff, mostly straight lines, some short steep stuff, erosion on the fall-line trails and along west side of main north-south creek have exposed roots creating some challenge. Biggest difference is that most of the trails are not wide enough to accomodate horses. More narrow, raw singletrack, but while there are a few bits of flow it's obvious that none of it was built for riding. I think the straight trails make it seem a lot smaller (to me, anyways) than the park really is.
The doubles are in the section to the south of Little Diff Run, which used to be connected with a couple bridges - both of which are now gone. Seems more evidence of bikes in that area.
I recently GPS'd as much as I could find and rode just over 9 miles, but I find it hard to get much flow going in there. So I don't go there when I'm looking for a real workout. I did meet some guys who would ride out from Vienna, drop in through Glade, cross over Lawyers (where the park property comes all the way out to that road) and do a loop around FMDP and back home for a good workout, so you could do that. I can show you if you want to hook up for a ride sometime.
Attached the Reston Paths map and one of my GPS runs.

Attached the Reston Paths map and one of my GPS runs. Thanks for the maps and gps, those will come in handy. Are there any rock gardens? This is what I need to work on, especially if I plan to return to Rocky Gap Xterra. I've located a couple small ones in and around the Colts Neck area, but they're few and far between. I'm always keeping an eye out for new ones when I drive around Vienna, Reston, Herndon, Sterling, etc.

Only the one steep section near the main LDR crossing. Not where I'd go to work on those skills. Probably much more rock on the Diff Run section of CCT.

It's actually pretty easy to find if you park by the big soccer field and head in away from the field. Check the RestonTrails map I sent below. It's only about 50' into the woods. There's a red fence around it. Can't miss it.

Has anyone ridden on the fairfax county park authority trails off folkstone drive? Its about half a mile from fred crabtree park. if you go into folkstone drive from west ox you will see a trailhead in the woods on the right shortly after the first stop sign. There is another trailhead shorty after that one. There are miles of trail. There is also a loop there. Not sure how long the trails are or where they go because there are many of them.

Yup. I mapped out all the trails in both Crabtree and Little Difficult Run SVP (the second area you referred to). Pretty decent trails for the lack of attention they get. (Although, The trails in LDR are how I used to (and will again once I move into my new house) get from home to Crabtree. There's a connection at the northwest end onto Folkstone that I used to use and another into the Southfield neighborhood. I'm sure there are other entrances to the south, but I haven't explored them. Bill Neidringhaus, the father of the CCT, is considering including these trails in a new effort to connect Bull Run to the CCT in Reston.
If you're in the area, you should also check out the trails in Granchayne Park, just to the south of LDR park. I havent' been there for a few years, but there used to be some cool stuff in there.

Where is Granchayne Park? How would the cct in reston connect to bull run wich is in centreville? Also do you still have to cross fox mill road to get to fred crabtree park from the folkstone trails?

I just looked on a map it looks like little dr is on both sides of fox mill road. Have you been to both, do you know if its possibble to take little dr to difficult run to claks crossing park? It looks like they are all in a line? My freind lives in a neigboorhood in clarks crossing park. That would be neat if I could just mtb all the way there through these parks....

from clarks crossing, take WOD to CCT-South and follow it until it gets to the Glade, follow Glade past Soapstone about a couple hundred yards and look for a trail on the left next to a 3' high electric box. Take that up and it will pass over Lawyers to the strip of county park land at the north end of crabtree. If you miss the trail off glade, go back to Soapstone and take it south until it ends and there will be another trailhead on your right that will take you into crabtree.
FCPA's LDR Stream Valley Park is the one that runs along south side of Folkstone. If you turn on the parks layer in google earth, you'll see what I mean. I'll post maps later.
Any interest in setting up a casual ride through the area?

I just checked and fox run is the neighborhood right next to me across the parkway. I ride there all the time on the horsepen run stream valley trails. The two trails that I found are both in one neighborhood off falkirk drive right across from navy elementary school. I think it could be done as a loop but you would have to ride along west ox or fox mill road for part of the way. I actually got to the 2 trails from franklin farm without going along west ox. I took the horsepen stream valley trails from ffx parkway to the piplines heading toward another part of ffx parkway into a percheron lane then took that to oxon road then took that to thompson road then crossed over west ox into falkirk drive where the trails start. And I found another section of little dr that starts in southfield neighborhood off of west ox

I did see some jumps on both trails but nothing very big, and I also saw that someone had just chainsawed some trees that were blocking the path. There was also some trail that I didn't get to explore all the way but it was right across from fred crabtree on the bottom of fox mill road where the creek is and there was an old rusted out car in the middle of the woods. Have you seen it? It looks like it connects to Little dr.

I didn't actually have my gps with me when I went so I just drew a line of most of the places I went yesterday. You can't see all of it though. The road on the right side of the map is fox mill. And the neighborhood on the left where it cuts off, thats where I took that to the piplines into franklin farm to horsepen run, and the trails ontop i think is little dr and it took me into folkstone.

Dan/Fox Mill MORE roders -- I just saw this thread this morning. I live in Franklin Oaks (intersection of FXCPkwy and West Ox). I cannot make it for a ride today (out-of-town guests here), but I am off all of next week if any of you are interested in a second recon run. I am very familiar with the CCT, and often ride the Difficult Run stretch south of Lawyer's road to Oak Marr. I have been looking for a good way to ride over there from where I live, so the Folkstone stuff sounds really interesting. An old freind of mine used to build trails somewhere across West Ox from Navy School. He and the other riders (all FS) called this area the "Lumberyard", but I have never found it. Sound familiar???? BTW -- I was on the big MORE ride at Catherine's Furnace last week so I may have met some of you already (?).

Frank --did you guys ride yesterday? ... Can you tell me where the Folkstone Trailhead is?
Sure did. Dan and I met at the soccer field parking lot in the back of Crossfield, we rode out to the LDR/Folkstone area, popped out on Southfield, rode down West Ox to Falkirk, then dropped into Granchayne (Lumberyard) and then back to Fox Mill Rd, back up to Crabtree, then out over Lawyers to the Glade trail until we got to the CCT and turned back there. A good exploring ride.
To get from your 'hood to the Folkstone trail, just head east on West Ox, through the light onto Folkstone Dr, and keep going on the road. After you pass Treadwell Ln, there'll be a gardrail on your right, you'll find the trailhead just after that guardrail ends - maybe within 10'. There are a bunch of intersections in there, but if you follow the most worn trail, you should come to a T in the trail within sight of Fox Mill and you'll have a footbridge with handrail on your left. Go right and you'll come out to a small open field and up to Westwood Hills drive. Go left and you have an easier crossing of Fox Mill Rd. Turn left on the sidewalk on the east side of Fox Mill and you'll see the trails on your right.
The maps I attched to my first post should help get you to the CCT. If my move goes well over the next couple weeks, I'll start a ride from the silo or something and take it all the way to the CCT. I've been wanting to check out the work that Randy and the scouts did by Vale rd.
Southfield is a difficult deal. I'm going to investigate that one with our friends at FCPA to see what we can do to get an easement through there. It would be a much better access from our side of West Ox.

I drove by there today and went down Southfield to the first left. At the end of the short road there is a 100-yard trail to a small park-- a field with a Volleyball court. The trail is marked Private - for neighborhood only. Is there a connecting trail off of the volleyball court field into the trail network? When you zoom in off of Google Maps, it looks like there might be. If so, that sounds like it might be a better way in.

There is another trail in on the right side of the field where people have dumped brush, you just follow that downward and it turns into a trail that goes to the right and left, if you go left the trail only last for another 500 feet and if you go right it leads into folkstone.

Pete, thats fine. Also lets start in franklin farm instead since we all live closer to there. Lets meet in front of the silo school off Dower House Drive at 2. Mkurle do you know where that is?
Sounds good, can't wait to connect all this stuff to the Farraday loop. How far are you gonna go tommorrow? Gets dark at 5 and I will have tubes this time so I am game. :)

I think Dan was talking about meeting at the Resotn Day school on Dower House at 2pm and then ride over to Folkstone and start the trail there.

I went to get mkurle from crossfield and when we came back to the day school there wasn't anyone there. Did you still go riding?

We were on Dower House, just before 2pm on our bikes and we saw a car w/bike pulling out of school and taking a R on W Ox. I figured it was you off to Crossfield so we just kept riding on over to Folkstone.
We took the trail got turned around a couple times, and ended up back on Folkstone again down near Fox Mill so we just crossed Fox Mill there and got on a nasty little trail that I flatted on immediately. We just bailed and came back home.

No tubes again? ;)
This weekend looks like some decent weather. Planning on Scheaffer Farms on Sunday, but maybe a ride to the Folkstone/Crossfield trails on Saturday?

Weekend looks bad for me.
I had tubes but it was butt cold, we were only a mile from home, had lost our way and at that point had no idea which way to ride. Plus I figured I would just flat again since all those trails seem covered with thorns. That place is a mess.
It was a waste of time. I should have driven somewhere and gotten some riding in.

Pete -- sorry we missed you. I was at Crossfield warming up on my bike when Dan showed up. We then drove back to the silo, but figured correctly that you may have left already. So we drove back over to Crossfield and started our ride there. We ended up riding for about 2 1/4 hours -- over to the CCT from Lawyers Road South close to where is hits Miller Heights Road and back. Got a pretty good ride in, but I should have worn my bootie covers -- my toes were totally numb by the time we finshed! I did ride the Folkstone stuff last week, but did not dig it much. The other side of that route -- the other stream valley and "the lumberyard" -- were a lot more fun.

Dan, let me confirm with the wifey that I can ride for a little while that afternoon. I got semi-confirmation, but let me nail it down.

Man out of here for a few weeks now... :(
Elbow issues. Painful tendonitis and loaded up with Alleve...
I'll get back out there with you guys soon enough. Doing an easy ride at Wakefield tomorrow to see how the elbow does...
