View Full Version : Another SS ? that has been discuss 100 times before

OK I know this has been discuss before but I can't remember the answer so.....
I have heard that there is a 2 tooth difference when running a 26 SS compared to a 29 SS (Meaning a 32/18 on a 29er is like running a 32/16 on a 26er) If this true, how did people come up with it? What is the science behind it? And how does running a 34t instead of a 32t chain ring effect this? And what about a 650B wheel?
Sorry but I am thinking and smoke is coming out my ears and my boys are asking "daddy what is wrong, you set off the smoke detector again. Mommy is not burning anything"

Gear inches is how it is determined. For each rotation of the pedals, how far does your bicycle move forward. That is calculated by taking your gear ratio and multiplying it by the circumference of your tire.
Circumference of your tire is found by measureing from the center of your rear axle to the ground (when the bike is vertical). Multiply that number by 2pi (2x3.14159).
Multiply that by your gear ratio: Chainring teeth divided by the cog teeth.
The end result will give you an exact comparison of the gear ratios between your 26er setup and your 29er setup.
Generally, I've found the "Add 2 teeth to the cog" a fair estimate.
Hope that helps.

Chain Ring=34
Cog = 19
Rear wheel Radius = 14.5" (just a guess... I have no idea what it is)
(34/19)x2x3.14159x14.5= gear inches.

I put this thread in the GEAR section. It might be easier to find here then in the PIT where things come and go pretty quickly!

Use Sheldon Brown's Gear Calculator:
http://sheldonbrown.com/gears/
I usually use Gain Ratio because it takes into account crank lengths. On my Jones, I am using 165mm cranks with 34x21 ratio at the moment which equals 3.6 Gain. On my Chester, I will be using 170mm cranks and to get equivalent gain, I need to run 34x20.5 :)
The equivalent on a 26er with 175mm cranks is: 32x17 or 34x18.

Geez, now my head hurts. ;)
Here's what seems to work for my feeble brain cell:
29 -> 26 = -2T for rear cog
-10mm crank length = -1T for rear cog
+1T rear cog = +2T front ring
The square root of pie is apple.

I need to run 34x20.5 :)
That's CK's next project-- a half tooth cog.
Or you may be able to run 34x20 with lower tire pressure or smaller knobs. ;)

Do you guys like shorter cranks for some esoteric reason or is it just weight?
Kidding... Is it for rock strikes or something else?
And I don't want to hear about running a 'long crank' on my bike to make up for anything...

175 cuz that's what I've always run. There wasn't all this thought put into singlespeeding when I started in 1998 so it's just another bike to ride for me.
I never run fixed and I still run a 2:1 on 26r (cuz that's what I've always run).
And I even use cheap ACS claws freewheels! (GASP!)

What carbon fiber 11-speed 6" travel bike are you running now? When I started 8-speed (gaspicus!) full-suspension in 1997, I didn't think about it much.

Aw, you forget that I have an 8spd Bontrager Race Lite with 1993 king headset and 1994 from Mavic rim with a 1992 flite saddle (perf white) and Titec pg188 ti bar, 1" Kore stem and 1997 Manitou sx ti fork. The WTB momentum grease guard (platform) pedals are even missing 2 bolts so they rock a little...
I still remember putting on a suspension fork WHEN THEY CAME OUT! I was talking to somebody the other day and they didn't realize that there were 2.3 tires back in the early 90s! Can you believe it?! I'll never forget those Ritchey Zmax WCS 2.35 tires! At Gambrill!
Those tires were my introduction to suspension! I still have the 1993 sub 1lb threaded rigid fork that came with my Sworks Steel frame. I love that the bike was called 'Steel.' Cuz it was the steel one...

When I first started biking we had square wheels and had to turn the cranks with our teeth. The bikes were made of solid stone and weighed more than JoeP's Momma.
My first trail ride was through the trails of a wilderness area which would later become the city of Philadelphia. We didn't even have chamois creme in those days for our saber tooth tiger skin cycling shorts.
Heck, water hadn't even been invented yet. We drank fresh blood from raptors we would stop to hunt every few miles down the trail.
You guys are spoiled these days with "tires" and "saddles".

Mike,
I really don't know why you like to keep bringing up when you started mountain biking, or even singlespeeding. Who cares? If you did start before me, I don't care. Your pee-pee is bigger? Who cares?
Since you eventually bring it up, let's compare notes.
I started mountain biking seriously in 1991. I started on a rigid fork. I used both thumbie and push-push XT shifters. I used Power Grips. I still have WTB Greaseguard pedals. I used the Smoke/Dart when they came out. When they first came out, I had a Manitou 1, 2, and 3. I used the red Ritchey Z-max tire in the first few years of the 90s also.
Am I old school? I don't care, you don't care, and nobody else cares. There are many here on the forum that started way before us. They don't have to keep bringing up that fact because they feel like they have to prove that they started before us. It doesn't matter.
What's your next move..."Uh, it's a bike, relax"? Or are you going to go back in time like you's the big daddy that brought mountain biking to the East Coast after riding with the Dalai Lama?
Thanks for showering us with mountain biking, Mike. I owes ya.

I started in 1954 on a fully rigid singlespeed! Granted, it had three wheels, but whose counting? Now I have a two-wheeled rigid single speed . . . and, when I get older and better . . . I'm going to get a one-wheeled rigid single speed, yep! :D

everyone belongs to a cult of something and I belong to the cult of Jeff. ;)
I've always used 175's, but I also liked higher bottom brackets for the extra rocks clearance and being able to just pedal through. One bikes has 12.5" and the other has 13" (EBB top center). One of the things about the Jones that I wasn't sure if I was going to like was a lower bottom bracket 11.5 - 12" EBB. During the demo I used a bike that had 170's and didn't notice a difference, so when I got my bike I went crazy with the 165's. I use them on my road fixies and don't really notice a difference so why not.
So long story short, lower bottom bracket shorter cranks and relearning some skills, seems to be working out.
Do you guys like shorter cranks for some esoteric reason or is it just weight?

If you want someone to hate, there's this guy I know named Steve Dontigny. He thinks he's all that because he rides his IF singlespeed at Wakefield. But really, he won't take that thing out on any real rides cos he knows he ain't got nothin' in the tank after an hour of riding. I think I even saw him at Big Bear pushing a geared bike up a hill. Plus, his mama must be colorblind cos I've seen him wearing the red, black, and yellow Bike Lane Jersey with friggin BLUE shorts. I think my eyes just threw up.
Love (not hate),
