Just in case you haven't seen the discussion in the MORE forums, there has been a rash of car break-ins in the parking lot of Wakefield over at least the last couple of weeks.

Credit cards and cash were stolen from a MORE member's wallet while he rode on the club's regular Thursday night ride on Jan. 20. The thief apparently wanted to use the card before the member discovered it was missing: The wallet was left in the vehicle and the vehicle was relocked to make it look like nothing had happened. If you have left your wallet in your car on recent rides, it would be a good idea to check that no credit cards have been removed.

Two riders on the MORE Monday night ride on 1/25 had their cars broken into, but the victims had wisely taken their wallets with them on the ride. Their windows weren't smashed; instead the locks were slim-jimmed or picked. Neither of them had car alarms. Police and park officials have been notified of the break-ins.

One victim's car was also broken into several weekends ago. He said that the thieves in the first break-in had only taken his credit card and left the wallet where he stowed it so it wouldn't be immediately apparent that anything was amiss.

This might be going overboard, but it would be prudent if you were on a ride at Wakefield over the last couple of weeks to check your bank/credit card accounts to see if the crooks took your name & CC numbers (but left the cards), then made online purchases and whatnot.

Be careful out there. If you see something going on, don't try to apprehend anyone. Just call the police. When getting ready for a ride, make sure to lock your car, take your wallet with you, and turn on your alarm! When getting back from rides, make sure to check that any valuables left in your car are still there.
