New Ride! Starting Thursday, August 28th!!!
Pace: Casual/Moderate
Difficulty: Intermediate
Contact: Frank Raiti, frank.raiti@comcast.net or (c) 703-217-1033
Location: The Bike Lane, Democracy Dr., Reston, VA (In Reston Town Center)
This is a socially-oriented, casually-paced ride through the singletrack of Lake Fairfax Park, the CCT, and the Reston area in general, starting and ending at The Bike Lane in the Reston Town Center. Rides will range from 12 to 18 miles, depending on the route and pace. Our default route will be the main loop through LFP, Colvin Run, and CCT, finally incorporating the hillside climbs of the Twin Branches area, but with so much good stuff to ride in this area, we’ll probably ride a different variation every week. We’re hoping to make this a night ride once we get approval to do so through Lake Fairfax Park, but for now, we’ll be finishing up before we need the lights. Riders should meet at 6:00 and be ready to ride at 6:15. The ride leader(s) will try to start as promptly as possible.
Lights should not be needed, as we should be back on the W&OD before dark.
Riders are strongly urged to purchase a hydration pack and use it. A single water bottle is not sufficient, even in cooler temperatures.
Pace: This ride is a social, casually-paced no drop ride, meaning that no matter how bad you’re feeling, we won’t be leaving you for dead. However, considering the terrain and distance, you may want to make sure you’re fit enough to survive it. Of course, if you’re feeling like you may be a bit slow – no problem – just lean on the “social” aspect and bring along a few good stories and jokes and we may not notice the lagging pace. ;-) If you have any questions, feel free to contact the ride leader.
Location: The ride starts in front of The Bike Lane – Reston, 11943 Democracy Dr., in the Reston Town Center. It’ll be great to be able to start at a shop and even better to end within walking distance of a number of fine “watering holes”.
Terrain: Obviously this is going to vary some based on the route, but the current trails at LFP, while fast, are rooty with steep hills, a couple rock gardens and a few stream crossings. The hills in the Twin Branches area are steep and technical enough to fit right in at Fountainhead, but there are only a few of them. Riders should use good judgment and dismount when in doubt.
All riders joining this ride will need to sign the standard MORE waiver form.
This is meant to be a beginner-friendly ride. Bikes should be in good working order, and riders should have basic equipment such as a spare tube, water, and trail food. Helmets are mandatory. Recommended dress is multiple layers appropriate for the season. Gloves, eye protection, cycling shorts, and cycling shoes are also a good idea.
Weather: As this ride starts and finishes on the W&OD, the weather will have to be pretty bad for us to cancel. If weather conditions warrant, we may reroute the ride to a combination of the W&OD and the wonderful Reston roads and paths, so as not to damage trails further than they already are. Information on closures and asphalt reroutes will be posted in this forum.
Ride Leaders: Frank Raiti (contact information above). If I'm unable to make it, it might be Bill Hellwig or Anne Mader. Check back here for updates.
Post Ride: All riders are welcome to join us after the ride for some post-ride refreshments in the Town Center. Come out and help us pick a new favorite hangout in the Reston scene.
