Since I highjacked Yak's thread yesterday I thought I would create my own. Thus begins my odyessy to buy a FS, light weight, XC bike.

Based on my preferences, and input from the fine people on the MORE Forum, I have the following on my list so far:
Jamis Dakar XCR Pro
Santa Cruz Superlight
Giant Trance
Specialized Epic
Trek Fuel EX 8

At lunch today I tried to address priority #1 -- the Jamis. I rode from my office up to City Bikes in Adam's Morgan (where I purchased my current Jamis 13 years ago). I had called late last week and was told they had the exact bike I wanted coming out of the demo fleet at 10% off. I cleared the purchase with "the boss" and finally made it up there today.

The dude at City Bikes says, "Oh, uh I don't see it. Let me check in back." "Nope, not in back. I guess it's gone." So I talk to the dude for a while about some other options like some Specialized Stumpys they have coming off demo (they have nothing else suitable on the floor and the dude says "Sounds like something you'd have to special order."). Finally it dawns on the dude, "Oh, I know what bike you're talking about. The service manager is checkin' that bike out." So much for getting the sweet carbon fiber bike of my dreams for a discount.

I need to test ride and time is running out. "The boss" mentioned kitchen renovations this morning so my funds may be gone before I know it. Any suggestions for how I can test ride multiple bikes without driving/riding all over the place?

I have a Superlight, size large. If that is your size for that bike, we might be able to work out a test ride.

Eric

Thanks for the test ride offers fellas. I'm probably somewhere between a small and a medium though (5'8" and skinny).

New bike purchased: Rocky Mountain ETSX-50. Hudson Trail has some good deals right now. Thanks for all of your input.

That's a sweet bike. I ride a 30, but wish I had gotten the 50. The brakes alone are worth the higher price. This is the last year that Rocky is doing the ETSX, which is a damn shame.

(Disclaimer: I work at HTO... but I bought my Rocky before I started working there)

Go with the Trance X. That bike is extremely slick looking, and 5" is the new 4" anyways.

Very true. Kona is introducing the One20 (http://www.konaworld.com/09_one20supreme_en.cfm) line, which replaces the "Four" from '08. I'm surprised they didn't just call it the "Five" this year.

Either way, I'll be buying the One20 frame to replace my '04 Salsa Caballero (http://www.light-bikes.com/bikegallery/BikeListing.asp?id=665) (not my actual bike) this year. Mine's got the 5th Element Progressive on it in case anyone is interested in an 18"?
