Mayor Adrian Fenty has canceled all public appearances for the next few days because of a bike accident.

Dena Iverson, Fenty's spokesperson, says the mayor crashed his bike Tuesday afternoon. Iverson was not sure if Fenty was taken to a hospital or if he was wearing a helmet, although she says "he always wears a helmet" while riding.

He goes on a road bike ride in the afternoons on a regular basis with one of the Road Bike clubs.

I think he even did an Ironman this summer.

He is very quite about his fitness

The mayor is a triathlete. I saw him on the race course at a couple of races last year, Lake Anna & Eagleman 1/2 Ironmans. I wondered what the deal was out on the bike course because it was the first time I'd seen hulking, bouncer looking types at various locations at a race, standing next to unmarked police cars. Talking with others after the race I learned they were the mayor's security team.

His folks own Fleet Feet too. Big on athletics.

He does the Haines Point ride I know.

And he is pretty fast as well. I did the Philly Olympic Distance Triathlon last year, and he was in the field. I do a lot of adventure racing and I consider myself to be in very good shape, but this was my first triathlon. I was shooting for top third, and was pretty happy with my finish just outside the top quarter (390th out of 1544th), but the mayor still beat me by about 6 minutes, finishing 257th out of 1544.

He was featured in TriDC (I think that is the name) magazine a while back. He seems to be pretty serious about racing.

He rides for DC Velo and does the HP lunchtime ride all the time.

I was scanning youtube last night watching videos of the westernport wall in the savageman race, and there was footage of him on the wall.

Yes, he did that race last year, but DNF'd. Made it thru the bike, including up the Wall, but didn't go out on the run. He hung around for the awards ceremony though. I didn't believe it was him at first, no security, nobody with him at all.
