If were talking about people with too much time on their hands.....

My very FAVORITE example (in a good, and endless extensive way) of that is Scary Squirrel World (http://www.scarysquirrel.org). Skwerl Says where people submit captions for weird skwerl pictures. I submitted a picture my officemate took of a skwerl cooling his belly on a hot day by lying on the top of a tombstone at Arlington. They used it for Halloween.

What can one say? There are simply no words I can think of that are appropriate to describe my feelings of utter disdain for people with nothing better to do than lambast (now there's a cool word for ya Peter!) poor innocent squirrels in such a patently bigotted way.

Of course I don't have much worthwhile to say for those with nothing better to do than to propagate traffic to such sites and talk about how ridiculous.... OOPS!! what was that about glasses houses and rocks Mom? :o

Here's one of my favorite wastes of time:

Possibly one of my favorite quotes comes from that web site....

And it took Billy Shakespear how many pages to come to the same conclusion in Hamlet?

If, however, you're tired of all these edgy web sites, and need something a bit less challenging to read, may I suggest this (http://www.mayonet.com/mayonnaise.htm)?..... or this (http://www.world-of-mayo.com/Mayonnaise.htm)? ;)

Peter is the only one I know in MORE with a Mojo on his bike. I keep meaning to get around to putting a squirrel on mine. But I haven't yet. Unfortunately, I found out just now that I'm NOT allowed to use anything I've actually purchased. Someone wanna give me a squirrel?????

Actually, after my crash last May, I was thinking of glueing a whole passel of squirrels to my handlebars to soften the blow during a crash.

Can you think of a place where a friend could acquire a skwerl for you to use as a Mojo? I could always just go out back with my blow gun and hunt one up, but that might ooze after a few weeks. Plus killing for a mojo might not do that much for your karma.

While we're on the topic of Mojos, I seem to have found the ultimate mojo. It brings me luck, gives name to my bike (the jinglespeed) and annoys the hell out of anyone who rides within 20 meters of me. What more could you ask for?

One friend was telling another friend that she was cleaning her basement and found the squirrel that was her very first taxidermy project. That was back in Oregon (now she lives in West-by-god-Virginia), so it's a tufted ear skwerl. She didn't know what to do with the skwerl. The other friend said, "I know who would want it!" Presto, a month later, a box arrived with a real live dead skwerl in it. The thing is mangy. It's missing an eye and a few toes. But I figure it's quite a conversation piece, so it's sitting out in my family room. I think it isn't up to the task of being a bicycle mojo.

I'm thinking that from the Noah's ark reference, that these are bible thumping skwerlzeses.

SG: You could always get a friend (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=67212&item=7132435175&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW) for the one you've got. He looks so lonely. This one comes with a life-like nut in its mouth.

The Stuffed Ark (http://www.stuffedark.com/squirrelgraymdh.htm?source=overture )
I'm thinking that from the Noah's ark reference, that these are bible thumping skwerlzeses.Isn't an 11" skwerl a little BIG for the ol' handlebar?????You could always get a friend (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=67212&item=7132435175&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW) for the one you've got. He looks so lonely. This one comes with a life-like nut in its mouth. Very nice. I do so like the description:
A stuffed grey squirrel mounted on a long piece of bark and with a nibbled pine cone in its teeth. The bark is just under 24" long. The squirrel is in excellent condition (apart from being dead, of course) and is sympathetically done in a life-like pose. There is a loop on the back of the bark for wall hanging.

A friend of mine, originally from Poland, now from Carlsbad, NM sends me skwerls from time to time. But I don't dare put 'em on my bike. She sent me a pair of silk Chinese skwerls. Far too nice to grunge up in the mud. She also gave me a plush chipmunk. Now chipmunks are, indeed, ground skwerls (as opposed to tree skwerls or flying skwerls). But I refuse to become "Chipmunk Girl." <barf> On the other hand, a mountain bike might be more of the scampering across the ground type than leaping from branch to branch variety. I might possibly sacrifice the chipmunk for the bike.

Have any of you noticed (or been to) the Sully Farm on Rt 28 in Chantilly? It's a Fairfax Co historic park. I finally went there the other day with yet another friend visiting from New Mexico (why is it all my friends live VERY far away from me????). So Jim... Just *why* do you know so much about Furbies???????

The Peeps page is great. I *love* science. Too bad their pictures weren't clearer.

Makes me think about some fellow grad students who decided to experiment to see just how much cockroaches could take. They centrifuged 'em (all their bodily fluids went to one end so they were dark on one end, and light on the other). They put 'em in a vacuum line and pumped out all the air. They chilled 'em in liquid nitrogen. Unfortunately that was all done at the inception of the internet, not everyone had webpages and digital cameras didn't really exist. So there's no record of their work. Though they probably could have published in the Annals of Improbable Research--maybe even received an Ig Nobel prize.

The other amazing thing is that there are a whole crowd of folks (including Pixey Boy) who spend enough money on costumes to keep a custom costume company in business:

I like to dress up at Halloween, but I don't have any alter persona I pick up. Nor am I willing to spend more than about 20 bucks to do it.

The MORE forum is remarkably "nice."

Other than a few people,--Gary, Peter, me--who spur each other on with inane humor, everyone seems pretty cool. Perhaps some of you have participated in larger fora where it ain't always so. For those, a Guide to Flame Warriors (http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/index.htm) was developed. By making fun of flamers, the author has deflated a few of them.

Hey SG: are those classes this week? Where, and are they already full/closed? Also, do you know if there's an age limit, i.e. could I enroll along with my 13 yr. old daughter? (She's getting into babysitting & those would be good things for her --or anyone, for that matter-- to learn).

Just curious.

The classes are Tuesday and Wednesday. One night each, 6-10, so I doubt I can even ride one last night loop with you. I don't know which night is CPR and which is First Aid, but it doesn't really matter, so I didn't ask.

I rode Hoyles Mill Sat morning with James. It was a really nice ride. Crossed paths with Peter's group several times with their herd of people and all their mechanicals. All was fine until near the end. I messed up picking my way between rocks and logs and trees. I banged up my hip. Nothing too serious, but it did hurt.

http://www.deepcaves.net/biking/HoylesMill_May_05/hm_may_05.html

As soon as we finished, I raced over to Wakefield to meet my friend Peter. Remember, he tried your bike last year at Schaeffer to try out your disc brakes? He's got a cross bike. He'd never been to Wakefield before, weirdly since he lives in Vienna. I showed him nearly all the trails, but the Bowl. I was having trouble cuz I lost a bolt (or is it a screw) that holds the cleat on my right foot. Yes, I'm trying Crank Bros. pedals. So, I can't unclip, I twist my foot and it just turns the cleat around on the shoe.

Anyway. I crossed that deep gully by the beltway, the one that not too long ago, someone filled with sawn branches. I'd always chickened out on it. Last Tuesday I tried it for the first time and was successful. This time I tried it and was not successful. On the far side, my front wheel twisted and I fell forward landing with the end of the handlebar jamming me straight into the center of my chest. There was only one tiny good thing about it. It didn't knock the wind out of me because it didn't punch me in the diaphram like the other times I've endo-ed. No, it just severely bruised me, scraped the skin (handlebar rash????), and hurt like hell. That was the end of riding this weekend for me. Peter (LP) rode Colts Neck, went home, and had his tire explode.

Nice, Martin. Great compilation. I may have one to add....

This guy has made it his life work to recreate the old and new testaments of the bible in Legos... complete with contemporary dialog.

The Brick Testament (http://www.thebricktestament.com/).

Here are some wonderful samples....

http://www.thebricktestament.com/judges/jerusalem_massacred/jg01_08b.jpg
From Judges 1:8. The Masacre of Jerusalem. (Notice the woman getting impaled in the pool of water and the blood in the water.

http://www.thebricktestament.com/the_gospels/satan_tempts_jesus/lk04_04.jpg
The Gospel of Luke 4:4. Jesus is tempted by Satan. Those of you who are Harry Potter fans might notice the amazing similarities between Satan and Severus Snape. Hmmmmm Coincidence? I THINK NOT!

There's plenty more out there. The book of Judges is particularly graphic in its depiction of lego-ey biblical violence. There are some wonderful things out there too. I'm just enamored by the way the guy portrayed some of the epic battles from the Bible with legos.

Have a nice day.

Mon Nov 28,11:39 AM ET

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore scientists looking for ways to transmit the sense of touch over the Internet have devised a vibration jacket for chickens and are thinking about electronic children's pyjamas for cyberspace hugs.

A wireless jacket for chickens or other pets can be controlled with a computer and gives the animal the feeling of being touched by its owner, researchers at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) told Monday's edition of The Straits Times.

The next step would be to use the same concept to transmit hugs over the Internet, it said.

"These days, parents go on a lot of business trips, but with children, hugging and touching are very important," the paper quoted NTU Associate Professor Adrian David Cheok as saying.

NTU is thinking of a pyjama suit for children, which would use the Internet to adjust changes in pressure and temperature to simulate the feeling of being hugged. Parents wearing a similar suit could be "hugged" back by their children, the paper said.

Love,

Pete

Think about how much time that would save you, though. You could set up a timer on your computer to hug your kids every 38 minutes. If you wore one of those vests, they could hug you back.

I need to get some chickens so I can use the chicken hugging vests. I'm not entirely sure what benefit that is, but it must be easier than trying to catch a chicken and hug it.

In honor of my good friend Squirrel Girl, I thought I'd post this.

My friend Andy has two pet squirrels. They were babies that fell out of their nest before they could fend for themselves. They were raised in captivity and now live inside and outside. They're amazingly cool. They go outside to forrage and play for a few hours per day, then beg to come in and spend the afternoon inside. They have a nice habitat indoors and use a litter box to go to the bathroom.

Staying warm is tough for a domesticated squirrel. Andy's mom did her part to help.

I certainly hope the answers at that link are a bit more useful than what I get out of my computer. I finally got one of those Magic 8-balls to help with keeping things running right. ;)

What is the difference between "caving" and "spelunking?"

LJPretentiousness? :DOn whose part? Those who use "caver" or those who use "spelunker"?

Fortunately, in the 21st century, there's a website on everything:
http://www.umsl.edu/%7Ejoellaws/ozark_caving/mss/spelunk.htm

The upshot is, the media likes to use "spelunker" because it's a weird word, and how often do you get to use words like that?

For no particular reason, cavers have always used "caver" and never took up "spelunker." Because it's only the people who don't know anything about the exploration of caves who use the term, it's now used by cavers to describe people who don't know what they're doing. There's a bumper sticker that says "Cavers Rescue Spelunkers." I have one on my office door.

Don't worry. I usually stop talking like a pirate by St. Patrick's day. Green beer has that effect on me. ;)

Wouldn't that just turn it into NSPLADPD (National Speak Like a DRUNK Pirate Day)?

DRUNK Pirate
Is there any other kind of pirate? I thought that drinking was the #1 activity of most pirates (not to downplay whoring or pillaging). ;)

Love,

Pete

PS: I'd like to formally appologize to any sober, gender-sensitive, peace-loving, persona-property-respecting pirates out there on this web site. Obviously the little dance number posted in this thread was created JUST for you. ;)

Have a nice day.

Enjoy. I think we need to have a national day associated with this web site.

I swear t'God, an intelligent life form is gonna drop in on us and see something like this or Jerry Springer or WWF..... They'll scoff at us earthlings and split quicker than they arrived. I pray for us humans.

I'd like to take offense at this post. I'm not sure what you mean by "something like this". If you mean this thread, then you're absolutely right. If you mean dailydancer.com, then you're absolutely right.

In regards to Jerry Springer: He is a well respected former mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio that does some cutting edge public affairs television. Oh forget it. Even I can't shovel that much horse shit. You're right about Springer too.

You're DEAD WRONG about the WWF though. The World Wildlife Fund is dedicated to stopping the degradation of the planet's natural environment, and building a future in which humans live in harmony with nature. If you're talking about the World Wrestling Federation, The World Wildlife Fund sued them back in 2000 and they were forced to change their name to World Wrestling Entertainment. So HA! I got you on that one!

Most importantly, maybe the intelligent life form will see all this (Feta Cheesa and all) and take pity on us and give us the gift of enlightenment, peace and/or x-ray vision.

Have a nice day. :)

You know, I have always loved this picture. I think its because I have certain views of the world and the people who reside in it, and, you know, this picture helps confirm them. :)
