The Wednesdays at Wakefield W@W course is marked and ready to race this wednesday - weather permiting. Be careful riding wakefiled in the opposite direction of the race arrows for the next month.

Anyone want to place bets on how many of the races get rained out this year?
At the rate things have been going, we'll be lucky to get the full series in.

Well my firsrt W@W went well. Really well actually. Won the Clydesdale. From what I have been told that was mainly die to Joe Gwardz (is that how it is spelt). Just need to keep my holiday pounds on for the rest of the series.
Good race. Loved the course. Nice and flowing and very fast.
Good work PVC for putting on the race. Just wish that it was not down in NoVa.
Top work to Tuba for placing. Maybe if he had remembered to bring along his gears he may have won.

It was quite the turn out for the second race. LOTS of racers on the trail.

I just break the 200lbs barrier. I have a week in New Orleans and a week in the Bahamas to thank. Now I just have to try and turn that fat into muscle. It also helps to have a 6"3 frame to put the weight on Gears might not be a bad idea. Although it is bloody flat out at Wakefield

I guess I was just spoilt in Australia with a crit that ran 50 weeks a year and was rideable from the city. Very nice having something like that so close.....that and no Beltway to deal with.
Well I hope that Joel and Doug rock up for the next race. Will see what happens then.

Judging by how long it took last night to sort out the podiums I would say that you will not see the results till tonight at the earliest

In case anyone was wondering... BYKGRL (Helen), racing Female Sport yesterday, number 234 is okay.
She did an endo on the pumptrack in the bowl on the last hump before heading into the woods on the race course yesterday at a pretty good rate of speed. Her helmet was cracked in half and her face, shoulder and elbow are pretty beat up - but nothing is broken. We got to the ER at about 8:30 and didn't leave until 1am.
Good times.

Thanks for the update and I’m glad she’s OK. As I was leaving I saw a girl who had her arm in a sling and it obviously looked like she had just wrecked on a bike. I was wondering what had happened.
And just to pass along some Wakefield knowledge. The bowl is the section of woods sandwiched between 495 and the new ball field. That section of trail was not in the race course. I think your talking about the rollers on the Phase I side of the Power Lines. Doing casual rides on the rollers is completely different than racing on them. Riders really need to make a concerted effort to either keep both wheels down or to make it a jump. A lack of concentration and too much front brake causes the real wheel to air.
L
PS I feel compelled to help correct people with Wakefield terminology because I fear the 911 call or the call to the front desk of Audrey Moore from a downed rider who thinks they are in one place when they are really in an other.

What a relief to hear Helen is ok, I passed her on the trail too. I definitely take it slow on the rollers (and every other part of the course for that matter) but especially on the rollers making sure to keep both wheels firmly planted on the ground.
Also - Larry - fyi there are some bees in the woods ther after the rollers. Best description is after the logs and some straightaway trail, you hit one tiny dip, then a bit more track before hitting a second larger dip that sweeps to the left with the log. right there after that dip is where Christine and I both got stung. It's just before you head up the climb and then head off to the right again. hope that makes a little sense!

Speaking of which, where can I find a map of Wakefield that identifies the different phases? I checked the various Wakefield maps in the map gallery, but if there's one that shows the boundaries of all the phases, I missed it.

Having been on the receiving end of a 911 call that took us a while to find the person, is there any way to get a really good trail map posted out there to help the folks that don't know the trails very well. The grid map in the pictures section is good but doesn't have the area names on it.

There were no bees there today. Maybe they were Yellow Jackets? They get real frisky near dusk if anything is in the area of their nest. They usually nest in the dirt via a small "snake" look hole and ALWAYS have more than one entrance.

honestly, i couldn't tell you the difference between a bee or a yellow jacket or a wasp... :o all i know is it was yellow and black and stung
larry - Grid location L/6 - there's a dip that turns to the left as you head towards the climb with the gravel/stones and U-turn to the right at the top. stinger culprits are right after that "dip" i think there's a log that lays on the side of the trail right there too.

We had 3 yellow jacket nests on the course last year. I'll try and locate the nest and take it out. If you know exactly where they are please mark it with scrap of caution tape tied to a tree nearby. You can usually get pretty close to the nest if you move slow.

Thanks Larry - I appreciate the correction and following clarification. It's funny how you can convince yourself of something, even when it isn't right! :p
You said it just right about the rollers- either keep the wheels down or make it a jump. Helen was somewhere right between, though this was just a fluke of sorts. She's ridden that secton dozens of times and raced it last week as well...I think she just started sailing and possibly had more air that she was used to ending in a nose dive.
Recovery has been good, but our sailing trip planned for today has been cancelled. They did a cat scan and x-rays which revealed no broken bones and the final diagnosis was a combination of a shoulder strain and sprain. Ouch.
Reading the rest of the threads, I should mention that there was another guy walking around the ER in dusty spandex. He had been stung by whatever was out there and is allergic. Fortunately he had a medication with him to combat it, but without it his airway would've swelled shut! He was leaving as we got there, but had come to the ER to be sure the medication had worked.

I looked for the Bees today and couldn't find them. I don't think anybody had a problem with them during last weeks 6pm race. What probably happened was somebody went off trail to pass and disturbed the area around the nest. I left 3 orange stick flags with Bees written on the flag next ot the brown FCPA sign between the dip and the top of the climb. If someone sees the bees please put the flags before and after the nest on the same side of the trail as the nest.

Since I have not been doing the scoring this year, the boys are having trouble with the computer program used for scoring. There is no way those times are correct. It is based on the computer clock compared to the starters watch + a time correction for the wave starts. If that is not all exactly right the times will be off. The 45+ boys are fast, but I don't believe they got 5 minutes faster from week 1 to 2! The SS times are about 45 seconds slow based on my clock.

When I talked to Omari last week, he indicated that the first race did not adjust for the different start times of the classes. They were going to adjust that for week two.
Also, every year I time myself and then look at the official time. It's always about 45 seconds to a minute 15 off.

Helen, you don't by any chance commute east on Route 7 from near the Sheraton in the afternoon, do you? I think I recognize your avatar from real life. (I'm usually the nut pedaling down the access road with an orange messenger bag.)
haha if the camera guy had been there this time, I was planning on at least SMILING, since my shots from the 1st race weren't very complimentary. BUt alas, no photographer to catch my crash in action. And I definitely wasn't smilig  TG Ken was there to assist!
I DO commute down route 7.. and typically down the access rd as well! i'll keep an eye out for ya (not that I don't already!) :D

Ok, so the times were really off for WAW #1 and WaW #2 were not that far off for most classes. Now I just feel REALLY slow! :)
Vj
When I talked to Omari last week, he indicated that the first race did not adjust for the different start times of the classes. They were going to adjust that for week two.
Also, every year I time myself and then look at the official time. It's always about 45 seconds to a minute 15 off.
Welcome to the racing side of the WAW........:D

Dry 2 weeks in a row? Not to worry, WaW is back to her old tricks. Pretty ominous looking out here in Herdonia.
40-60% possibility of showers is the worst. You just don't know what to do. Should I sit in traffic for a rainout? Do I have the right tires? Air pressure?
Usually it backfires on me, either I opt out and it never rains at Wake or I go and it does. I guess it wouldn't be Waw without threatening weather. Throws a little $hit in the game. ;)

So is each lap counted by hand for each rider? I thought by now a transponder system would have been put in place. Each rider can buy a personal transponder to keep and use for life with this system. I know, the system probably is not that cheap, but it would save alot of headache during registration and actual hand counting of laps. And of course pay itself off eventually.

For the folks that may drive from a distance, what's the cancellation protocol? I THINK (because these trails are so heavily used and rain-sensitive) that WAW will cancel even at the last minute. So if it is dry all day but then breaks out raining at 5pm they might cancel? Is that correct??

We only have 5 wednesdays to work with because after the last week of July it is too dark for the 7pm race. Therefore we do everything we can to get the race run without doing any permanant damage to the trails or putting our racers in danger of lightning and high winds.
In the past (8 years now) we have more than once
A. cancelled a race early in the day based on a weather forecast and no rain fell
B. not cancelled a race based on a weather forecast and had to cancel at 5:30 because of torrential rains at 5:15.
C. Cancelled a race early and rains came
D. Not cancelled a race gambling on a bad weather forecast and did in fact get the race in before the rains came.
So now you know why MOBL is no longer agrravating his ulcer on Wed deciding what to recommend to to the Race Director.

It's my call...so far we have had no rain, except for an early morning sprinkle. Therefore the race is on as of 1:30pm. If the radar looks ominous around 3pm we may cancel and update the website. If we get rain later after we have opened registration we may cancel and won't be able to update website. In which case we will notify the Rec Center front desk, there number is 703.321.7081.

Why doesn't the 4-race series span the summer solstice every year? This year's solstice was on a weekend, so we would've had 2 races before, and 2 races after the longest day of the year. That is the best we can do.
Starting earlier in June also reduces the chance of the pop-up t-storms that are most common in late July-August.

the wed before the 1st race this year poured down rain. Also school was still insession in some jurisdictions. We used to only do the weds in July but went to the last wed in june to help our cause. Also we usually take the wed of 4th of july off which we did not do this year. That was a brilliant decision by someone because we had awesome weather and almost the largest turnout ever.

Just got back from Wakefield and the racetrack is in good shape as of 3:00 pm. Just a few soft spots in salamander and the stream trail.
Also located the bees which are technically yellow jackets. I marked the nest with the orange flags Mike provided. The nest is in the rear of the small log to the right of the middle flag. The bees are pretty active so you need to keep to the left side of the trail or the racers behind you will likely pay the price. Yellow jackets are wasps and since their stingers are not barbed, they can sting you over and over. This area is right after you come out of the last big dip in Phase I before you reach the top as Dharma described earlier.

The trails are sweet and hard packed. The mud from the prior races has either dried or been filled in. Fast, Fast, Fast conditions if they hold. This is as of about 2:45.
Where toonces spotted the bees there was an additional hole on the edge of the trail that the yellow jackets appear to have abandoned. That may have been the issue in the earlier race. We both rode by and stood on the trail and they did not get feisty with us at all. It looks like a sizable nest beneath the log. If anyone smacks into the log, them critters are going to be pissed off. Also, they get more aggressive as it is getting dark and they are all coming home for the night, but it really did look (to me) like the issue was the hole that was right on the edge of the trail... or, if any one has the front wheel smack the log, good luck.

I am not doing the series this year, but If I had a vote, I would say that whoever has the slowest lap time from all the classes has to move the bees.
I had to deal with a nest about 3-4 weeks before the Bakers Dozen and got stung several times - not fun.

People were MUCH faster last night than last week by my pass-o-meter, I was passed WAY more times, by a mix of the SS types and a few masters I think. A few less riders at least in Beginners this week may have also contributed to faster laps also, as less passing (work).

And I have not experienced problems with anybody. Everybody I meet on the course during the races (and afterwards) has been real friendly, even in requesting to pass or being passed. Even the bees didn't bother me or the others with me when we passed them :D:p.

Seriously, the only place the fixed wheel messes with me is the rooty 495 creek crossing, but it allows an additional level of control in the sketchy corners that can't be beat. You wouldn't autocross in a car with an automatic transmission, right? Instead of grabbing brakes, you just relax a little to manage speed, like downshifting.

Near the end of my last lap in the 35+ race last night, my seat came loose. I left it until this morning to fix, and while tightening it up I discovered some play in my rear suspension. I was worried that the bushings were shot again (I just had them replaced a few months ago) but closer inspection revealed that the linkage bolt connecting the rear shock to the link was sheared off in the middle - half the bolt was gone and the only thing holding the rear end of the bike together was the threaded portion of the bolt. I took it to the Bike Lane today and they discovered that (probably after the bolt sheared off) the linkage itself is cracked and almost broken in half! Scary to think what would have happened if it had all come apart while I was bombing down through the woods!
