when riding at Conway-medium skill, do you recommend using clip in pedals or not. Just worried may not be as fast getting out as I might be falling in snowy conditions.

the problem isn't so much getting out of your clipless pedals in the snow, it's getting back into them when your cleats fill up with snow. this becomes less of a problem if you use pedals that work well at shedding mud. I have a pair of shitmano 959 and the Ritchy copy of the 959, and both work well. older pedals like 747's don't work as well.

went to Prince William Forest Park-rode the fire trails which normally are pretty lame but with an inch or two of snow provided a great workout. Cleats got full of snow and came up with the PW shoe slam to clear debris before clipping in. Great fun anyways.

1/30/05 >> Nothing like a good slam or slap to clear the cleats. Sometimes though, this doesn't work (or hurts too much if your feet are cold). Here's a couple more ideas on how to handle Ice or snow: First, find a plastic spoon or fork and remove (break off) the fork/spoon part. Use the handle for picking snow or ice out of your cleats. Even better would be a small piece of aluminum. Plastic might break if your working to clear ice. A small mini screwdriver
would work great although a little heavier...(yes, I'm a weight-weenie) If your not a weight weenie then a can of windshield de-icer works great. Of course putting some de-icer in a small squeeze bottle would be great for your jersey/Jacket pocket...just make sure it doesn't leak.

I only use clipless pedals. Unfortunatly, my pedals are Shimano SPD's. Not too good in the snow. I've heard that egg beaters are very good for snow & mud. I may have to give them a try.

And banging your feet against the pedals works well too.
