All the talk about things that can go wrong winter riding and nobody told me about this. Friday afternoon, Rosaryville 23-25 degrees. I'm walkin all creek crossings so the feet dont get wet. The snow freezes around the cleats so i can't clip in. Had to take off shoes one at a time, hop on one foot, and beat them against a tree to break the ice loose.

Is this just my brand, Shimano 520s or does this happen to anybody else.

I know, stop walking and this wouldn't be a problem.

I use older shimano pedals and riding in the snow is fine, especially this nice powderey snow. But stream crossings tend to glue all the snow together into a mess.

I recommend riding all the time, especially stream crossings. When you get back on whack your cleats on your pedals really hard so that your pedals spin round. This normally clears enough ice to be able to get clipped in again.

Or go and buy some eggbeaters or times.....

I bang my cleats/shoes against the pedals before clipping back in for these conditions. I'm running Time ATACs that stay pretty clear but can become iced us when the water and snow mix. Works pretty well when I remember to do this.

I quick shot of Pam on the cleats and pedals helps with snow build up. Just a little.

Dave found that the butter flavored Pam worked quite well on Sunday.

1/24/05 >> In freezing temperatures it's always best to avoid water (in any form). Of course sometimes that's impossible, especially in snow. The thing I use to remove ice build up is just your everyday can of spray de-icer bought at any auto parts store. Works great on cleats, derailliers, pedals...etc. It might even work on rims although I've never used it that way.

I'm gonna get some on the way home. I should have thought about that. Sure alot better than hopping around on one foot beating your shoe on a tree.

Next time I'm out with ya and it gets icy, don't evan ask to borrow the de-icer. Hmmmm, could be a money maker. $1.00 a shot in the parking lot, $2.00 on the trails.

Gotta luv capitalism. :D

On a serious note, does anybody know if de-icer will degrease a chain. Does it have solvents in it? Anybody know what the active ingrediants are?

I can see how pam would work, but doesn't it eventually wear off. I would think it would wear off cleats after the 2nd or 3rd time you had to walk. I'm also thinking about rims icing up with V-brakes. I don't think Pam and V-brakes are a good combo.

Dumb Hippy, probaly ride a horse during the week, don't ya.
