OK, I know this is another GPS thread but I am lazy and do not want to sift through a bunch of stuff that many not answer my questions so.....

I want to make really good maps

I am looking for Topo software that has and can do
A. The best quality topo's
B. Enter text on the topo's (names of trails and land marks)
C. Merge tracks
D. Modify tracks
E. Make different trails different colors
F. Is easy to use

I am new to the GPS mapping thing so as I go along I will have more questions

I have a Garmin Vista HCx. The software that came with it is a little lame.

yeah, i have the topo usa 7.0. i bet you can install it from my cd (that they sent me to evaluate!).

you can do a lot of this stuff on google earth pro, methinks, but i've never used it. .kml files that google uses are probably more universal but i'm not sure on that either.

good luck. i hope you have a lot of time on your hands. i can bring the laptop to lodi if you want to check out the software.

I would like to check it but I am doing The Michaux Maximus this weekend. Maybe we can hook up later.

Topo Fusion all the way. It's cheap and is the best for map making imho. I also have the garmin stuff and the National Geographic topo software for our region. If you want to check any of it out drop me a line.
