Well I sure hope everyone got a chance to enjoy the wonderful riding weather today. I've been looking forward to it - all my bikes are in tune and ready to go. Unfortunately I've been under the weather recently so I'm taking it easy and staying off the bike for a few days. I made the best of the situation and took on a bike wrenching project instead.
Today I installed the Stan's No Tubes tubeless system with a broken-in Panaracer Smoke/Dart tire combo on a 26" WTB Speed Disc wheelset. I consider myself a beginner to low intermediate home mechanic. I own 3-4 useful Park tools and can keep my drivetrain shifting smooth and pretty quiet. I've installed a chain, swapped a cog, and set-up my suspension - otherwise nothing very complicated.
I was more than a little intimidated facing the installation of the Stan's System. The basic tubeless conversion kit comes with several parts and ingredients, and the installation involves many steps, techniques, drills and even some body English. With my limited skills I prepared for the worst.
Well it turned out to be super straightforward. I watched the installation video on Stan's website – http://www.notubes.com/support_movies.php. Then I stepped through the installation procedure, always going back to watch the video in between steps. It took me about 2 hours - including gathering all the required tools and stuff plus background music selection time. The tires are now successfully installed and holding air! I took a quick test ride around the back yard and everything feels good. This was by far the most involved bike project I ever attempted. I feel great.
Hat's off to Stan's - the video is so clear and easy to follow. Tubeless is a great upgrade - My LBS installed Stan's with the Nevegals on my Blur last fall. I really love the way tubeless tires feel and perform. Don’t be put off by the installation process. With a normal MTB rim and a decent set of tires, install is really a breeze. Check the Stan’s site for compatible rims and tires plus the great installation video. The technical forum is also a great way to get insight and advice from Stan himself - along with a few other experts at the company.
Totally Tubeless Tom :D
